I’m grateful that people are becoming more aware of the need to reduce our waste. Several groups have cropped up on Facebook in recent years promoting ways to go “zero waste” or reduce plastic usage.
But there are some out there who, while they admit the need to reduce waste, also frequently say something that really irks me. They say that it’s not really personal waste or habits that’s the problem, it’s industry.

City arranges free events at skating trail
The city’s Parks and Recreation division will ring in the Lunar New Year this Saturday, Jan. 25, with a special free event at Clergue Park Skating Trail.
The event opens at 7 and runs to 10 p.m. It will be followed Sunday, Jan. 26 with family fun and a bonfire from 1 to 5 p.m. Last weekend the division arranged a torch light skate from 6 p.m. and a bonfire on Friday, Jan. 17. Skaters marked National Popcorn Day on Sunday, from 1 to 5 p.m.

Volunteers sought for new tourism board
City of Sault Ste. Marie seeks board members for a new tourism corporation.
City council passed a resolution on Dec. 2, approving a new model for economic and tourism development in the community. As part of this model, a new nonshare capital tourism organization will be created.

The United Way food security program, Harvest Algoma, has partnered with the Station Mall, local business, food banks, and community volunteers to bring an new event to Sault Ste. Marie this spring: Canstruction.
