    NORTH BAY — A jury has recommended that the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police and the province examine the feasibility of equipping all police vehicles with portable defibrillators.
    The recommendation came at the end of a two-day inquest into the Dec. 15, 2016, death of John Roberts, 49, of Sault Ste. Marie.
    Roberts had been arrested following an impaired driving complaint on Highway 17 near Bonfield shortly before 3 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the North Bay Regional Health Centre

  • New legislation kicks in for new city council

    Sault Ste. Marie’s new city council will be losing a tax break.
    Federal legislation that comes into effect in January for elected officials means their previous one-third federal income tax exemption will be eliminated.
    Previously, elected officials have been able to use the exemption in lieu of claiming expenses related to their duties.
    Bill C-44, which officially received Royal Assent in June 2017, is expected to put another $30 million in personal income tax revenue in federal governmen

    Sault Ste. Marie PUC customers will not be able to pay their utility bills in person anymore, starting in the new year.
    Giordan Zin, PUC communication supervisor, said the in-house payment option is being discontinued because it is not well used.
    Only 1.4 per cent of the PUC’s 33,000 customers drop off cash payments for the bills and only 3 per cent make their payment at the Second Line office. The in person method includes a mix of customer demographics but leans towards older customers.
