Letter of the Day: Honouring Ritz is laughable
I agree 100 per cent with Joyce Neufeld’s letter in the Dec. 12 StarPhoenix that Gerry Ritz shouldn’t be inducted into the Agriculture Hall of Fame.
When he was in parliament, he did more damage than good for prairie farmers. Ritz getting rid of the Canadian Wheat Board was one of the worst things that happened in the history of Canada’s agricultural industry.
It wasn’t what the majority of farmers wanted, so why did he do it? Only Mr. Ritz can answer that.

Buyer's market continues but rebound expected in 2019
When he listed his upscale Willowgrove condominium for sale last month, Chuck Edwards knew it might take awhile to sell — and that he would almost certainly lose money when it did.
Edwards, an engineer in the mining sector, bought the condo two years ago but now wants to sell in order to buy a “cute” older house with a garden, which he misses having.
The two-bedroom unit is currently listed for $295,000, but Edwards — who said he has received one offer to date — exp -

Wrapping up Sporting Christmas with a flourish
All we can say is a big thank you.
Champs of all ages, backgrounds and circumstances gave from the heart this Christmas season, donating money to Sporting Christmas, which we turned over to the Salvation Army for its hamper program.
Thousands of people were fed; kids had presents to open; memories were created which still spark smiles today, and will for a long time to come.
We always do one final Sporting Christmas update in the New Year, noting the donations that have continued to flow in. We& -
WHL trade deadline passes as Blades pull the trigger on one final deal
The last deal was the biggest deal.
Josh Paterson — who had been the longest-serving player on the Saskatoon Blades — was traded Thursday to the Portland Winterhawks in exchange for fellow 19-year-old veteran forward Ryan Hughes on the final day prior to the WHL trade deadline.
The Blades also gave up a second-round WHL Bantam Draft pick in 2020 and a fourth-rounder in 2021. The second-round pick originally belonged to the Swift Current Broncos.

Saskatoon Blades newcomer Cyle McNabb on second team in four days
Cyle McNabb — traded twice in four days — was barely with the Kootenay Ice long enough to get to know his teammates.
He hardly had time to unpack his suitcase and settle in with the Ice when the Saskatoon Blades came calling prior to the Western Hockey League trade deadline.
“It all happened so quick,” admitted McNabb, who practised with the Blades for the first time Thursday.
“I’m ready to settle in here and I’m excited.”

Read My Book: The Water War
By Kevin Miller
It was the summer of 1984. I was in Grade 8 and just awakening to the importance of current events. Hence, I was reading the Yorkton Enterprise newspaper one day when I came across an article about a group of college students who had decided to liven up their summer by carrying out a series of targeted assassinations.
Yes, you heard that right. Killings. Murders. Slayings. Homicides. Yorkton always was a bit of a rough place.
But these weren’t any ordinary executions. In fa -

Gardening: Having fun with creative planters
When I was growing up in Britain in the 1960s, serious gardeners considered plastic gnomes and similar garden ornaments completely unacceptable. Most planters were made of stone or wood.
My mother used an old stone sink in a sunny spot to grow early bulbs, followed by a bed of thyme. There was also a large stone cider press — Mother planted bulbs and other perennials in the shallow trough that ran around its base.
Gardening in Canada, with three children who loved plastic chickens, gnomes, -
Food: Harness the power of garlic in everyday cooking
There are probably plenty of small but mighty ingredients hanging out in your kitchen. Cinnamon sticks, dried chile peppers, cardamom and herbs are all proof that size is definitely not proportionate to how much flavor a food has.
