Letter of the Day: Grateful for act of kindness after fall
On Aug. 17, I tripped and fell over a curb in the bus mall. Reacting with embarrassment, I am sorry to say I failed to thank the two (or three?) men who helped me up. I don’t think I even made eye contact with them and I am ashamed of my selfishness and haste in rushing away as quickly as I could.
I was all right, just suffered a few bruises, but am very sorry I acted so badly when all these people wanted was to help. A very human reaction, no doubt, but I hope I have learned from my exper -

The Nechvatals: Hoops for Hope more than just a game
Basketball is the sport, but the name of the game is competing against — and hopefully someday beating — Cystic Fibrosis.
The Hoops for Hope tournament has become an annual event in Saskatoon, spear-headed by the Nechvatal family, whose two boys, Dominic and Ben, live with the fatal disease.
The three-on-three tourney was created and continues to be coordinated entirely by volunteers Shaun and Katarina Nechvatal and Shaun’s sister, Sharlene McNairn.

Read My Book: We Are All Animals
Having been fascinated by funny facts about animals in her first book, “My ABC Book: Wild Creatures! Weird Facts!” Anne has now tackled “thinking” and “feeling” what it’s like to be other animals.
The title gives it away: We are all animals, and we share feelings of joy, loneliness, excitement, and sometimes sadness.
Anne has introduced to young readers the need for kindness to animals with whom we all share the earth. The language is simple and the pres -
Gardening: Now is the time to plant fall bulbs for spring colour
I’m not admitting that summer is over, but now that we’re into September, we can’t pretend fall is not around the corner.
That means it’s now time to start planning for spring colour by planting bulbs. It’s truly an act of faith when you put a dry, dormant bulb into the ground in the fall, watch the leaves on the trees drop and then expect flowers to develop in the spring from seemingly so little.
There are thousands of different species and cultivars of bulbs (and -

Paulsen: Saskatoon has no choice but to play geographical bogeyman in Corman Park
Taking a line from Canadian songstress Avril Lavigne, the relationship between the City of Saskatoon and the Rural Municipality of Corman Park is complicated.
While each desires a relationship of collaboration and co-operation, land and money often interfere with the best of intentions.
Saskatoon is one of a few unique Canadian cities completely surrounded by one rural municipality. If Saskatoon requires more land for development, there is only one option. Having to negotiate with only one party -
New role, new beginning: Humboldt Broncos crash survivor Xavier Labelle joins Saskatoon Blades
When Colin Priestner put his iPod on random play Thursday, it was quite fitting that the first song he heard was “Courage” by the Tragically Hip.
“That’s the word I think of today,” the Saskatoon Blades general manager shared during a media conference at Merlin Motors.
“Xavier Labelle is a young man who exemplifies courage.”

If the province was asking, “why us?” it never got an answer
The Liberal Party of Canada brought its road show to Saskatchewan this week, but the spectacle left most residents more confused than impressed.
The 2018 Liberal Caucus Retreat brought many of the party’s 183 MPs to Saskatoon — along with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau — to prep for Parliament’s fall session.
If the province was asking, “Why us?” when it heard about the Trudeau and company gathering, it never got a clear answer during the visit.

Gormley: Path to recovery challenging, but worthwhile
Sometimes a confluence of events points to a theme. Lately, it’s how people recover from adversity and choose a way out of darkness.
Five months after the Broncos’ team bus disaster, the world again descended on the city of Humboldt as hockey season began. Sixteen families forever grieve their lost loved ones. Thirteen other families support their survivors, some of whom walked away, while others will never walk again.
There is no cookie cutter formula for grief and pain. Every perso -
