In a rare public expression of opinion, a Saskatoon judge placed blame on Legal Aid Saskatchewan’s head office for a “dire” shortage of lawyers representing society’s most vulnerable people in the city’s courtrooms.
Speaking from the bench on Thursday in Saskatoon provincial court, Judge Barry Singer said he was dissatisfied with a “systemic” shortage of Legal Aid lawyers that is leading to people accused of crimes “sitting in the can.”

Letter of the Day: Dog parks in Saskatoon
There are currently 10 dog parks in Saskatoon with several more in the planning stage, the fencing and maintenance of which are very costly. Although they carve out park areas which are no longer practically usable for non-dog owners, these are no doubt very useful and beneficial to dog owners and a very visible payback for dog license fees. I see dogs and their owners having great fun cavorting, frolicking and socializing in large park areas safely fenced off specifically for them. What a bliss -

Gardening: Beware the Colorado potato beetle
Now that your potatoes are happily growing, and you have hilled the earth up around them, it is time to start scouting for Colorado potato beetles (CPB).
This beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata) is a voracious feeder and prevention is by far the best cure. While potato plants are tough and can tolerate a small amount of leaf damage, yields will be reduced if the beetles are allowed to do too much damage.
The adults are distinctive: reddish-orange head and thorax with yellowish wing covers sportin -
Food: Creamy shrimp pasta with mint and peas
Shelling peas is synonymous with summer.
Raise your hand if you spent many days of your summertime youth sitting in the shade with your siblings, or cousins, shelling pail after pail of peas freshly picked from the garden plot. As we sipped on lemonade, one by one the peas would fill up bowls, ever so slowly. I swear time stands still when there are peas to be shelled.
Back then, I’m sure I thought that dealing with the peas was a nuisance, as it seemed like a task that was never ending, a -

Bridges cover: From horses to design, Colleen Wilson follows passions
For as long as Colleen Wilson can remember, she would watch the Kentucky Derby with her mom on television, and would keep renewing books on the derby from the library at around six years old.
“To this day, horses are probably my greatest passion,” she said.
The first job Wilson ever had was when she was 10 years old, driving a pony wagon in Waskesiu when her family would go there for holidays — which she said may have been one of the things that sparked her love of horses. Acco -

Gormley: Listeners share their life advice
On my radio talk show this week, we discussed a new study examining theories on where a person’s “passions” come from. It also opened a good debate about whether it is helpful to suggest a young person “find their passion” in life as a key to happiness.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s decision to side with his Saskatchewan counterpart against the federal government’s proposed carbon pricing scheme is expected to have significant legal and political implications.
