Vince Streukens credits being a part of the Motorcycle Ride for Dad with saving his life.
Streukens, the event’s ride captain, was diagnosed with prostate cancer a few years ago. He said he never would have caught it as early as he did if it weren’t for what he learned at the Ride for Dad event for prostate cancer awareness in Saskatoon.
“I wouldn’t have known to get checked to start with,” Streukens said. “I know that men get sick, and I want men to get check

Cuthand: It's time to rename lake and honour Indigenous history
Did you know that June is Indigenous History Month? Not many people do. It’s a well-kept secret.
But if you start to consider it, about 95 per cent of Canada’s history is Indigenous. The first Europeans to come to Turtle Island were the Vikings back in the 10th century, but their stay was short and they made little impact. In 1497 John Cabot discovered the east coast of the country and named it New Found Land. Talk about an original name. After that, the French and English fought ove -

'Something needs to be done': Crystal Stone calls for action after incident at Saskatoon supermarket
One of the women at the centre of an incident involving allegedly racist behaviour by a grocery store clerk says the employee should be fired and the store should introduce sensitivity training.
Crystal Stone said she planned to make those requests at a meeting with the manager of the Confederation-area Real Canadian Superstore on Friday, just over a week after the incident.
“I don’t want an apology; something needs to be done. They have to make an example out of this. If they do tak -
New Faces New Places: Taking the hassle out of vehicle detailing
When Lindsay Quick first opened YXE Quick Clean last summer, her focus was on detailing fleet vehicles — until more and more people stopped in to ask if they could drop off their personal vehicles. She decided to switch it up.
After having her own car detailed and finding expensive prices and a long, inconvenient wait, she decided to do things differently. She set a goal to offer all her clients affordable, convenient and professional service.

New Faces New Places: It's about more than martial arts for the Momentum family
With a background in martial arts that started at five years of age, Kris Kembel was always interested in opening his own martial arts studio.
Kembel’s wife Joanne Horsley was quick with the encouragement and after they were given the opportunity to run self-defence courses out of a rented space, it didn’t take long for Momentum Martial Arts to be born.
It began with the couple running small karate classes out of the gym at Tommy Douglas Collegiate. After spending a short time in a s -

The work is scheduled to happen between 33rd Street and 39th Street.

Pot argument
Pot seems to be sparking the fire of ire in Saskatoon. People are saying that they don’t want pot shops within a certain distance of public parks, playgrounds, community centres, schools and a host of other spots.
I really understand and agree, protect the children at all costs. Oh, but what about those nasty confectionaries that sell killer energy drinks, cancer causing sugar, cigarettes and so on? Yes, danger around every corner.

Fuller: Are takeout food containers getting smaller or am I just more hungry?
Gus Turfrye is crying foul after noticing a change in his usual Chinese food takeout order.
The food was fine, he said, but there was something very different about the containers.
“They were plastic!” the local man said, clearly still in shock after a lifetime of eating takeout from aluminum containers.
Mr. Turfrye immediately contacted the SP iTeam investigative unit, which rushed to his Brightondale-Rosehampton townhouse near the Mews at Vista-Pointe.

Cycling advocacy group applauds 'courage' behind bike lanes plan
Cycling advocate Cathy Watts says a proposed network of protected downtown bike lanes is aimed at more than a small group of cyclists.
The City of Saskatoon unveiled plans for four connected bike lanes downtown, despite the opposition that dogged a two-year pilot project.
“It’s catering to the health of our community,” said Watts, who is co-chair of the Saskatoon Cycles advocacy group. “Is that a small group? We have to look at it in a more rational way.”

Humboldt Broncos hockey team overwhelmed with applications for head coach
The Humboldt Broncos hockey club says it has received so many applications for the team’s new head coach and general manager position that it needs more time to review them all.

Alanna Koch to take home $346,000 severance package
Alanna Koch, who officially left her post atop Saskatchewan’s civil service earlier this month, will collect a severance package worth almost $350,000 — the equivalent of 14 months’ salary, benefits and legal fees.

Father's Day and Pride: What it means to celebrate both events in June
Father’s Day is a double celebration for Brent Beatty — a day to celebrate as any father would, and a chance to take part in Pride Festival activities.
Beatty came out when his daughter Cam was about a year old.
It’s a similar occasion for Rob Norris and his daughter, JQ Norris, who came out when she was 12.
For Beatty, the reaction was positive, but he also got many questions about how the decision might affect his daughter, and how she would understand.
