Letter of the Day: Saskatoon Police must shift priorities
Re: Province leads in victims of violent crime per capita (SP, May 31)
It is indeed sad to see this headline and story. The Saskatoon Police Service has utterly failed to take control of crime fighting in our city.
Instead we live in a city in which the police force is obsessed with traffic enforcement. I’m sure there is no other city’s police officers so intent on chasing down speeders and distracted drivers in a city that has so many low speed limits. It is apparent that -

Traffic tickets down in Saskatchewan, but government still banking on $6.4 million in new revenue
Saskatoon police officers are issuing more traffic tickets than ever, but their ramped-up enforcement efforts are more than offset by a massive decline in the number of tickets issued provincewide during the last two years.

Gormley: Secrecy of murder victims' names is wrong
Who wants to live in a world where you can be murdered in secret?
If the Regina Police Service’s quick embrace of ambiguous privacy laws is any indication, they seem fine with the idea. But it’s not something that should be allowed to happen.
RPS recently decreed that privacy laws prohibit them from disclosing the names of homicide victims, relying on a yet-untested privacy regulation that deems the “information of a deceased person is their personal information” and can -
Gardening: The sweet complications of prairie pears
Most of the pears hardy on the prairies are hybrids of the Manchurian pear (Pyrus ussuriensis) and the European pear (P. communis). Breeders have sought to combine the hardiness of the former with the fruit size and quality of the later.
Some of the earliest breeding carried out on the prairies was by Dr. Cecil Patterson, the first head of the Department of Horticulture at the University of Saskatchewan. The Apostle series of eight pears was released in 1960 just prior to his retirement. While m -
