New Faces, New Places: Store designed to satisfy curiosity, offer sanctuary
Tired of waiting around for someone to open the store of his dreams, Ryan Giesinger looked at his savings and decided it was time to stop waiting and just do it himself.
Alongside his husband Shawn Obchansky, he designed the Practical Magick & Curio Shoppe from the ground up, creating a space that incorporates different types of magical and unusual books, objects and more under one roof — a benefit for people just starting out with witchcraft.
“A lot of people are curious and hav -
New Faces, New Places: Keeping hair clear and putting minds at ease
Most people’s first experience with lice is fairly similar: the dreaded letter sent home from school to inform parents there has been a lice outbreak and their children might be exposed.
About 10 years ago, Lice Squad franchise owner Marnie Farn got the same letter. So began her journey as a lice removal expert.
That first experience led her to try multiple products, which she quickly abandoned because they burned when applied or simply didn’t work. It took two months of diligent com -

Romanow: Under-appreciated Semillon is worth a second taste
Every year or so, I’m faced with an Australian wine evangelist. They come through telling Saskatoon to “try the Semillon! Use the Semillon! Your life will be infinitely better! Birds will sing and the sun will shine!” The wines come and they go from the wine stores shelves as Saskatchewan remains indifferent to the grape. Which is a shame.
Semillon is a great grape. Its most famous incarnation is a botrytis infec -
Bridging Borders series highlights refugee families, sponsor groups in Saskatoon
Faith communities are playing a major part in giving refugees in desperate circumstances a safe and secure life in Saskatchewan. So says Jana Al-Sagheer, Communications Associate for Mennonite Central Committee Saskatchewan.
MCC has been involved with private refugee sponsorship ever since the program began in 1979, and was the first non-profit organization to sign a private sponsorship agreement with the Canadian government. As a result of that work, MCC figures prominently in Bridging Borders, -

Saskatchewan curling teams find new footing during off-season of change
Kirk Muyres has a spring in his step as curling teams in the area stage a re-do.
Muyres, Steve Laycock’s long-time third, is pondering life as a skip in the wake of the team’s recent breakup and some freshly found teammates.

Recent articles in the StarPhoenix (March 12, Feb. 23, Jan. 18, Oct. 31, Oct. 16) regarding the Saskatoon Public Library’s move to a community-led model have given the false impression that all unionized staff are against all of the changes.

Fuller: April Fool's vending machine arrives just in time
It’s back! The April Fool’s vending machine! I invented it a few years ago to help people with their last-minute April Fool’s joke shopping.
This year it’s needed more than ever, because April 1 conflicts with Easter Sunday and people will be too busy trying to figure out how rabbits lay chocolate eggs to think of anything preposterous.
By the way, did you know that Easter Sunday will fall on a Monday in 2020 because of the leap year? It’s the first time that’ -
Cuthand: Pope's refusal to apologize for church's role in residential schools might be about money
This year the celebration of Easter in Indian country is tempered by the failure of Pope Francis to provide an apology for the Catholic Church’s role in the residential schools.
The response came in a letter released by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops stating that Pope Francis cannot personally apologize for residential schools.
An apology from the churches involved was one of the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. About two-thirds of Canada’s res -

Bridges cover: Ernie Walker leads an eclectic, industrious life
Dr. Ernie Walker has lived more lives than most.
There’s no one else in his line of work in Saskatchewan. That’s because the famed archaeologist and forensic anthropologist goes from digging up fossils one minute, to basking in the sunshine at his cacti farm on campus, or to a crime scene.
The University of Saskatchewan archaeology professor is inspiring the next generation to follow in his industrious footsteps, and he’s leading by example.

Wine World: A real deal on Sauvignon Blanc
The fight for shelf space in the Sauvignon Blanc category has turned into something of a street brawl.
New Zealand continues to produce some fabulous versions for not a lot of money. (Although Sancerre fans may find them a bit overstated.) What’s more, if you are willing to drink outside the box, you can find some serious deals.
I came across this one at Co-op and after drinking the better part of a case of the stuff (Not at once!) I have come to the conclusion this is a serious deal on a -
Bridges Gardening: A is for artichoke
Most people know artichokes (Cynara cardunculus var. scolymus) only as an exotic vegetable that is served as an appetizer: the fleshy bracts are removed one by one, the thick end dipped in warm garlic butter and then the inside fleshy part is scraped off the outer tough skin with one’s teeth. Or, you can usually find young quartered or whole artichoke hearts preserved in water or oil in the canned vegetable aisle: great in salads or on pizza.
