Romanow: Japanese whiskies high on quality and reliability
If you are a real whisky lover, you will have noticed “pretenders” appearing on shelves in the last 30 years. Canada has Glen Breton, New Zealand has a couple, but the real change has been the arrival of the Japanese malted whisky.
In the same way the Japanese started out in cheap electronics to become a world leader, their whiskies have gone from being something of a joke to being good enough for the Scots to respect. To make the point, all you have to do is comp -

Years ago, when Saskatoon writer Robert Calder — now professor emeritus of English at the University of Saskatchewan — was on a winter holiday in the Yucatán Peninsula, he came across a curious story that cried out for examination and illumination. Emotional Paralympic bronze for Moose Jaw's Marie Wright and Canadian curling team
GANGNEUNG, Korea, Republic Of — A Canadian curling team that had laughed and smiled its way through a roller-coaster Pyeongchang Paralympics was a puddle of tears after capturing bronze.
Moments after Mark Ideson, Ina Forrest, Dennis Thiessen and Marie Wright edged hosts South Korea 5-3 in Saturday morning’s bronze-medal game, the four raised their arms triumphantly. They gathered for a group hug. And they cried.
For Thiessen, a 49-year-old from Sanford, Man., the tears were about hi -

Dundonald storm water pond fatality
On March 7, quite the bit of folly was presented by the City of Saskatoon to the local residents concerning the Dundonald storm water pond.
The city does not admit that it failed to live up to the 2005 promises made during public engagement for this wet pond to drain the storm water for Hampton Village: That the shoreline would be cut low, the pond bottom would be gravelled, and the slopes would be very gentle.
Is it now safe to have dense foliage so close to -
Fuller: What if your steering wheel falls off?
I had a 1950 Dodge truck once that was super-cool.
One day, while driving down Queen Street, a car cut me off. Being more volatile than I am now, I laid on the horn. I did this while yanking the steering wheel to avoid a collision. Result: The chrome horn ring came off the wheel. Apparently, I had done exactly what you’re supposed to do to remove a 1950 Dodge horn ring: press down while turning the wheel to the right. The problem was that I didn’t intend to remove the horn ring. Also -
