McBride: Navigating estate tax returns
Are you an estate executor or a trustee? March 31 is an important T3 income tax return filing deadline for a trust with a December 31 year-end.
Remember there were big changes in tax rules for testamentary trusts in 2016. Tax rates rose dramatically. Calendar year-ends became mandatory.
What is a testamentary trust? It’s a trust established according to the terms of a deceased person’s will.
If you are trustee, does your estate or trust have to pay tax at the flat top-bracket rate of -

Douro reds transport you to the hot soil of Portugal
One of the great pleasures in life is sitting warm and snug over a glass of red wine, while besieged by wind and snow. And there are few wines better to enjoy in this situation than the rich, satisfying wines of the Douro valley.
Despite a wide variation in the cepage mix of grapes, they do share some interesting characteristics which force me to admit it may come down to the terroir. I avoid using this notion mostly because there are way t -

Review: Quirky Boom swims happily against the current
Who said “sometimes you eat the fish and sometimes the fish eats you”? No one, actually. But at the risk of sounding cryptic, let it be said that Boom has a large appetite.
This 2008 play by American writer Peter Sinn Nachtrieb looks small but has a lot to say about fate and fluke, despair and hope. And the wisdom of fish.
Hilariously eccentric, it starts with marine biologist Jules (Torien Cafferata) in his lab/bunker/apartment deep underground. Jo (Miranda Hughes) has answered his -

Letter of the Day: Learning from others is optimal
I had a disturbing and uplifting experience during a visit to the Remai Modern. The artist, Thomas Hirschhorn, asked: “What can I learn from you? What you can learn from me?” We sat together, as strangers and from different backgrounds, sharing stories and lessons. It left me wondering, if we knew each others’ stories, would we lean so easily into judgment and hatred?
There was a woman talking about the art of roasting and drinking coffee.

B.C. school division copies Saskatoon's upsetting anti-racism campaign
The City of Saskatoon’s controversial anti-racism campaign has inspired a similar effort by a rural British Columbia school district, which is also facing criticism.
The school district near Kamloops, B.C., took note of the City of Saskatoon’s multimedia campaign, which drew some complaints last year. Most of the ire was directed at a billboard featuring a middle-aged white man next to the quote: “I have to acknowledge my own privilege and racist attitudes.”

Libraries’ patrons deserve better
As a retired professional librarian I am dismayed by the overhaul of the Saskatoon Public Library. Wide empty spaces appear ready to display new cars or something equally inappropriate. The obvious decrease in staffing means searching everywhere for help with the latest version of the automated catalogue. I struggle to find parking only to discover half empty library shelves and I know space for thousands of books in the stacks is limited. What is going on -
Fuller: A letter home from a place called Testytown
Dear Mom and Dad. Greetings from Testytown!
It’s certainly been an interesting few months getting settled here.
I’m loving my new job at Supple Wrist Pinball. Who knew that a city this size could support an artisanal pinball factory? And good news! They already promoted me to the ball bearing division. Did you know it takes three weeks to hand-polish each pinball? Well worth it, the purists say.
It’s been very quiet here lately. Almost every resident of Testytown spends the win -
