The chief of Saskatchewan’s lone self-administered First Nations police force says he is “cautiously optimistic” that an injection of federal funding into First Nations policing will make conditions safer for his officers and allow his force to become a more attractive place for young people to work.

WINNIPEG — The federal government has announced a cash infusion of $291.2 million over five years for policing in First Nation and Inuit communities.
Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale made the announcement Wednesday in Winnipeg, saying the money will start flowing to communities served under the First Nations Policing Program in the 2018-2019 fiscal year.

The death of a 60-year-old man in Saskatoon’s Stonebridge neighbourhood is being investigated by police as the city’s first homicide of 2018.
John McPherson has been identified as the man found dead inside a home in the 100 block of Cope Crescent, Saskatoon police said Wednesday. Officers were first called Sunday around noon to check on the welfare of a person inside the home. When they arrived, police found a man dead inside.
