Romanow: If you go looking, there are some good deals on red wines
We now have enough wine stores in the province to have something akin to choice for inexpensive wine. Let’s not kid ourselves, however.
The combination of the Sask Party’s “Social Pricing” (trying to keep alkies from affording alcohol) and bonus taxation (inventing a new category of wine above 14.8 per cent alcohol that needs extra taxation) and of course the complete refusal to give up the distribution chain (which pushes all products t -
Jones/Nichols and Peterman/Gallant advance at mixed doubles curling trials
Jennifer Jones and Mark Nichols booked a berth in the Page Playoff 3-4 game at the Canadian mixed doubles curling trials Saturday morning with an 8-7 extra-end victory over Chelsea Carey and Colin Hodgson.
The Carey/Hodgson duo had hammer in the extra end and needed to hit the four-foot ring with their final stone. However, Carey’s throw was a little heavy and Jones/Nichols stole a single for the win.
Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant defeated Jill Officer and Reid Carruthers 8-5 in the o -
Review: Blood, treachery, war . . . and comedy? Henry IV has it
Henry IV Part One starts with a war-weary king looking forward to peace.
“The edge of war, like an ill-sheathed knife/No more shall cut his master,” says Henry, played very nicely by Gordon Portman in Saskatoon Shakespeare Lab’s current double offering.
Mankind being mankind, Henry IV Part One ends in a war, with no shortage of hacking and stabbing. So much for that brief peace.
But it’s funny how Shakespeare manages to fit so much comedy into all this bloody business.

New year brings new premier, new budget
When Saskatchewan Party members choose a new premier at the end of the month, one of the leader’s first priorities will be to shape the 2018-19 budget. The move will be among the premier’s first opportunities to show Saskatchewan voters what type of leader he or she is and how he or she differs from retired premier Brad Wall.

Rush, Swarm staging NLL finals rematch
The National Lacrosse League’s hottest team spent the last few weeks cooling off — not too much, they hope.
The Saskatchewan Rush, who opened their season with 17-9 and 24-11 wins, respectively, over the Toronto Rock and New England Black Wolves, had a bye last weekend.
That ends Saturday, when they travel to Georgia (1-2) for a game with the Swarm, who beat Saskatchewan in last season’s National Lacrosse League final.
Here’s some things to know as the Rush and Swarm prep -

Cuthand: The white man's burden of privilege still affects us
The topic of white privilege comes up from time to time, but it is the elephant in the room for Indigenous people and other people of colour.
White privilege is a tough topic to bring up because the immediate reaction among most white people is to be defensive and either take it personally or deny its existence.
“I’m colour blind,” a white person once told me. As far as I’m concerned, this cliché reaction implies that they can only see things in black and white.

Murray Totland reflects, offers advice to Saskatoon's next city manager
StarPhoenix city hall reporter Phil Tank interviewed retiring city manager Murray Totland just before he left the City of Saskatoon after more than 36 years.
Q: What will you miss most about your job?
A: A lot of things, actually. I’m really going to miss not being part of, kind of, all the excitement going on in the city. In particular, in all the time I’ve worked here, these last 10 years and the time I’ve been city manager, Saskatoon has been really transitioning and there&r -

Sharing traditions helps keep Ukrainian Christmas alive and thriving for Saskatoon family
For sisters Luba and Angie Wojcichowsky and their husbands Adam Peters and Clint Johnson, Ukrainian Christmas is an important time to remember loved ones and share long-held traditions with their own young children.

Shakshuka gives your new year a spicy start
A bright, shiny new year means new trends in the world of food for 2018.
Look for floral flavours popping up in food and drinks, as well as super powders like maca, matcha and cacao gaining popularity. Puffed and popped snacks are apparently going to be hot, as is root-to-stem cookery. The former has me excited as it means my fondness for hot, buttered popcorn is on trend, and the latter makes me happy as it draws more attention to food waste happening in kitchens.
Other trends of note include t -
