OTTAWA — During the CFL regular season, Conrad Brock and Mike Hassel are bitter rivals.
Brock, a Saskatchewan native who lives in New Brunswick, bleeds Roughrider green. His long-time friend Hassel carries a small plastic horse wherever he goes in honour of his beloved Calgary Stampeders.
At Sunday’s Grey Cup, however, they will be on the same side.
With Brock’s Roughriders not in the big game, he’ll support his friend’s club when they face off against the Toronto A

Mayors Tory and Nenshi tease each other on Twitter ahead of Grey Cup
The Mayors of Toronto and Calgary exchanged words about the Grey Cup on Saturday, a day before the Argonauts and Stampeders face each other in the CFL’s championship game.
A reporter tweeted that Jim Watson, the mayor of Ottawa, which is hosting the Grey Cup, would be supporting the Toronto Argonauts with his hometown Ottawa Redblacks being eliminated in the CFL East’s semifinal.
Toronto Mayor John Tory replied to the tweet, welcoming Watson to the Argonauts’ fanbase.

Grizzly bears back in hibernation for second year
It’s time for a long, well-deserved nap for two of the most popular animals at the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo.
Grizzly bears Koda and Mistaya are now officially off display and in full hibernation mode as the zoo prepares for winter. This will be the second time the bears have taken this long sleep, the result of a change made by zoo manager Tim Sinclair-Smith when he joined the Forestry Farm team in 2016.
Although the zoo welcomes about 30,000 visitors every winter, S -
REVIEW: No map needed to find fun on Persephone's Treasure Island
It emerges from the fog under a lightning-filled sky with thunder predicting doom.
And the audience bursts into applause at the sight of it. A pirate ship on stage, moving as if on its own? “Okay, one thinks, this is going to be cool.”
There’s a chest full of magic in Persephone Theatre’s Treasure Island and, despite some cold-blooded murders along the journey, much humour and delight.

Saskatchewan commercial fishers are becoming increasingly dependent on pickerel for their income.

Returns on pickerel accounted for 63 per cent of that total, even though pickerel only made up 23 per cent of the deliveries from Saskatchewan.
The previous year, pickerel were responsible -
Argos ground game boosts Grey Cup hopes
OTTAWA — Adding a strong running game to quarterback Ricky Ray’s pass attack helped make the Toronto Argonauts a more dangerous offensive team in the second half of the CFL season.
Now they hope to use James Wilder Jr.’s explosive running to keep the Calgary Stampeders defence off balance in Sunday’s Grey Cup game.
Wilder took over from veteran running back Brandon Whitaker late in the campaign and became a threat both on the ground and in the air for the Argonauts. He le -

Remai Modern revenue goals represent 'vulnerability,' gallery says
As Saskatoon’s new art gallery prepares for its first full year of operation, a 2018 budget document acknowledges its planned revenue is “very ambitious” and an area of “vulnerability.”
The Remai Modern Art Gallery of Saskatchewan plans to raise nearly half of its operating budget in 2018, $5.3 million, from sources other than the city’s funding of $5.5 million.
Overall, the gallery’s budget is expected to jump from $7.4 million this year, when the galle -
On pins and needles: Murray Hill gives a first-person account of knee surgery in Saskatoon
As I lay on an operating table listening to my favourite Jesse Cook tunes on an iPod, I found myself reflecting on the role a Playboy magazine played in putting me there.
I was having my long-troublesome left knee replaced by Dr. Jeffery McKerrell, a prominent Saskatoon orthopedic surgeon. I was wide awake, and although I had a good set of noise-cancelling earphones and my own musical playlist running, I was quite able to take in some of the sights — and many of the sounds and smells &mdas -

Loved ones remembered as Sporting Christmas picks up steam
As Sporting Christmas waddles through November on tiny toddler legs, we find ourselves closing in on the $10,000 milestone, and going ever-higher.
Our annual effort to help the Salvation Army’s holiday hamper program runs until Christmas, and we’ll enjoy watching cards, notes and donations pour in as the weeks go past.
I took a quick look through our archives today, and Rocky and Bea Rochelle were always a steady Sporting Christmas presence for us — year after year after year. -
Grimson feels fine, but ex-NHL puncher keeps a wary eye on the future
Stu Grimson’s old occupation is carved into his face — a scar here, an indent there, an array of fists leaving their mark at rinks from Vancouver to Florida.
The brain, he’s not so sure about. Grimson — whose nickame is “the Grim Reaper” — admits he’s concerned. The long-time NHL enforcer, who fought more than 200 times in the big leagues, has watched some of his old grappling peers fall by the wayside — early deaths, post-mortem brain studie -
Fuller: Leonardo da Vinci has a lot in common with me
Leonardo da Vinci was one of the greatest geniuses who ever lived. Me, not so much.
And yet both of us are credited with long-lost and latterly discovered masterpieces that have the art world buzzing.*
Da Vinci’s is Salvator Mundi (“the saviour of the world”), a painting that fetched US$450 million this month at auction. I like “fetched” — the cliché they always use when something expensive gets sold, much more delicate than “raked in.”

Cuthand: Racism needs to be a focus of the MMIWG inquiry
This week the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls rolled into Saskatoon. This commission of inquiry has been fraught with internal strife and calls have been made for it to be abandoned and reset.
