Book excerpt: 'Residential Schools and Reconciliation: Canada Confronts its History' by Jim Miller
University of Saskatchewan historian Jim Miller’s 1989 book, Skyscrapers Hide the Heavens, was the first among several of his comprehensive works delving into Canada’s newcomer-Indigenous relations, residential schools and treaty-making. Now professor emeritus, Miller’s latest book, Residential Schools and Reconciliation: Canada Confronts its History, also is the first comprehensive historical study of reconciliation. He covers a lot of ground, including the apologies by church -
Wine of the Week: Uncork a good vineyard and you can't go wrong
There is a belief system in the world of winemakers and growers that is held with almost religious intensity.
It is the faith in the terroir. By this the growers mean everything from the microclimate to the soil type to the correct clone variety for both. Sometimes they even mean the local yeasts.
Using inoculation (buying your yeasts from a supplier) makes me hugely cynical of the entire concept. While I can buy into the notion that over three or more hundred years vi -
McBride: Here's what you need to know about defined benefit pensions
Do you belong to a company pension plan? If so, do you know what benefits you can expect to receive when you retire?
Typically, a defined benefit (DB) pension promises to replace a percentage of pre-retirement earnings. If that is the type of plan you belong to, you likely receive a personalized statement each year telling you the monthly benefits you can receive when you retire.
A benefit rate of two per cent is designed to replace 70 per cent of earnings after 35 years of service. When you mul -

Cuthand: The first Thanksgiving has long roots
The story of the first Thanksgiving is part of the creation myth of the United States. It evokes the image of happy Indians and Puritans sharing a meal of turkey, corn and other good stuff. While the first Thanksgiving is alleged to have occurred in 1620 it wasn’t until 1863 that President Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving as an official holiday.
Over the years, the prosaic image of the Wampanoag Indians the Puritans feasting and celebrating became a part of the seemingly peaceful and co-ope -

Fuller: What if America's love of Thanksgiving equaled its love of guns?
Back in more innocent times, it was easy to pretend that the only significant difference between the United States and Canada was Thanksgiving.
Ours is in early October. Theirs is in late November. Ours is a polite, quiet, unassuming holiday. It suits our personality. Theirs is a huge, loud and expansive party. It suits their personality.
It’s a bit like guns. They love them way more than we do. Which gets me thinking. What if we looked at guns in terms of Thanksgiving? In America, you can -
City of Saskatoon proposes $3.5M expansion of conservatory
