Closing arguments for La Loche school shooting delayed again
Closing arguments in the sentencing hearing for the teen who fatally shot four people in La Loche last year have been postponed again after the Crown prosecutor was named a provincial court judge.
Closing arguments were initially scheduled for Aug. 25 at Meadow Lake provincial court, but were adjourned until Sept. 1 because two defence witnesses wrote to the judge saying new evidence suggested the youth shooter had fetal alcohol syndrome. The Crown was expected to cross-examine those witnes -

Food: Cobble together a peachy dessert treat
It’s that time of year when I’m savouring the last snippets of summer. The feeling of warm grass underfoot. The way the light shines through the shimmering trees. The taste of peach juice, running down my chin. The smell of a loved one’s neck slathered in sunscreen. The sound of thunder off in the distance. Little things, to be sure, but they are what I long for when the snow is knee-deep and I’m tired of being cold.

Wine World: Ontario a good stop-off for pinot enthusiasts
My globe trotting parents found in their seventies that jet lag became a real problem to their enjoyment of far away lands. They took to staging their entrance and exit, pausing for two or three days in various ports en route. I thought then and still think that this is a great idea. Why blast straight home from Europe when you can pause for a couple of days in Toronto to get re-acclimated?
If you take this up, consider making scenic side trips to Niagara wine country. The living is easy, and we -
Gardening: Late summer border blues
Here it is, the beginning of September, and in spite of a stressful summer in terms of hail, a few of weeks of extreme heat and little rain, the perennial border is still going strong. Blue and yellow seem to predominate. They’re a good combination as blue by itself can become lost (“faded” in full sun and in a dark hole in the shade) and the yellows and gold bring out the best in blues in terms of colour.

Letter of the Day: Think of planet like a greenhouse
I think Larry Roosdahl is on the right path with his explanation of global warming in his letter “Carbon dioxide vs. Mother Nature.” However, there are a couple of items he hasn’t factored in. The greenhouse is a good analogy. The atmosphere does for earth what the glass does for the greenhouse. It lets light in and blocks some heat from leaving. If you mess with the delicate balance of gases in the atmosphere there are bound to be some consequences.
