Master hypnotist entrances crowd at the Exhibition — literally
Audiences at the Saskatoon Exhibition were wowed by an incredible display of mental magic thanks to the skillful and sometimes silly performance of the fair’s hypnotist.
It’s a hypnotist’s job to make sure everyone is put under a spell during their performance. The master hypnotist Tyzen does it by infusing his act with comedy from start to finish.
“When I was in high school, I enjoyed doing magic but I also enjoyed doing improv comedy,” he said. “When I -

Cam Fuller: The best Ex ever was just a helicopter ride away
It was going to be the best Ex ever, which is saying something because they were all excellent.
We were an Ex family, of sorts. My dad fancied himself a bit of a carny. One year, he bought a charcoal barbecue and had a burger stand. Could anyone in the 1960s set up a food booth at the Ex merely because they felt like it? Apparently.
But maybe this was less entrepreneurship and more an excuse for dad to escape to a place that had legal gambling for a week. Imagine that — blackjack day and n -

Wall set to apologize for Sixties Scoop
Premier Brad Wall says he will apologize to Sixties Scoop survivors as soon as Indigenous leaders name the time and place. “We are ready immediately. We are ready to do this next week,” Wall told reporters Friday. He first made the promise of an apology two years ago, after Manitoba Premier Gary Selinger was -
Mosquito.Buzz helps residents get the most out of our short summer
No one likes mosquitos, especially in the summer in Saskatchewan.
Doug George knows this all too well as a longtime resident of Saskatoon. That’s why he is stepping up to do something about that.
A former investment adviser, George is now on a mission to keep the mosquito population at bay so we can all enjoy our short summer just a little longer.
Granted, the mosquito season hasn’t been as bad as it can be given the dry summer we’ve been experiencing. But George knows that can -

Protecting lonely seniors against financial abuse
Financial abuse is the most common form of elder abuse in Canada.
Financial abuse often starts after a health crisis or after the death of a spouse. A lonely senior in poor health can be vulnerable.
Such abuse usually goes unreported — either due to the victim’s shame and embarrassment or because the older person has dementia and doesn’t even realize what is happening.
The abuser is usually someone who has a close connection to the victim. A family member or caregiver can take -
Arbutus brings west coast contemporary to Parade of Homes

Cuthand: Wall's legacy with First Nations lacking
While the mainstream media gushed compliments and eulogized Brad Wall after his retirement announcement, his resignation was greeted with indifference in Indian Country.
His term as premier has been marked with very little progress or interaction with the province’s First Nations and Métis population.
This summer, the staff and students at NORTEP have been cleaning out their offices and making alternate plans. The provincial government trashed a long-time and workable program in fav -

Why are we jailing immigrants without charge?
A Nigerian man spent 199 days in custody at the Regina Correctional Centre before being deported. He had not been charged with a crime. A Pakistani man was held at the Saskatoon Correctional Centre for 111 days, also without charges.
These were just two of 21 men and women held in Saskatchewan jails as “immigration detainees” between July 2016 and March 2017. Eleven of them were not facing any Criminal Code charges. Even so, they were housed in the general population, side-by-si -
Whites from Portugal can be intensely aromatic
The relatively recent (and very slight) loosening of the liquor vending laws has allowed a larger variety of wines into the province.
Mind you, the vast majority of the stores are still intent on “pile ‘em high and move ‘em fast” products, even almost all of the large ones attached to grocery stores. There are, in fact, only about three wine stores in the whole province that make an effort to carry a larger range of goods. The rest -
WATCH: Nervous summer intern tries five pulse-pounding Ex rides
The Saskatoon Exhibition offers games, shows, food and more. But the main draw for many is the collection of carnival rides towering over Prairieland Park.
From the smallest Scrambler that spins you around in circles to the largest Ferris wheels, rides at the Ex come in all shapes and sizes.
As a not-so-brave individual, each one is horrifying to me in its own way.
On one of my multiple days reporting for the StarPhoenix from the Exhibition this last week, I made a list of all the ones I f -

Short-term rental properties on the rise in Saskatchewan
The short-term rental market is heating up in Saskatchewan as the home sharing trend grows, but some say regulations are necessary.
Several websites offer short-term housing rentals. Airbnb’s online marketplace has emerged as the more popular option to connect homeowners and travellers.

'Our premier was never one of those leaders who wouldn't take advice': Brad Wall's longtime operations chief reflects on a decade in power
Kathy Young has known Premier Brad Wall for almost 30 years, and spent the last decade as his chief of operations and communications — working behind the scenes to keep the government running. On Friday, she spoke with the Saskatoon StarPhoenix about her experiences in government with Wall.
Q: When did you meet Brad Wall? Did you have a sense at the time that he would go on to become premier?

After a long wait, Walls grabs Hilltops' starting QB job
As days, months, years crawled past, Jordan Walls waited his turn.
The Saskatoon Hilltops’ quarterback exercised his patience as much as his throwing arm during three years as an understudy to Jared Andreychuk. He’s now poking his head above the Hilltops’ depth chart, blinking into the spotlight, preparing for a title defence as the team’s starting quarterback.
“I had to work, had to watch, had to learn things,” says Walls, who will grip the football when the -
