Saskatoon’s focus on encouraging more infill development is getting a big test in the Nutana neighbourhood.
Meridian Development has purchased the corner lot occupied by the Faith Alive Family Church and is proposing to build a seven-storey condominium building.
About 35 people attended an information session about the proposed 45-unit development on June 28, according to Meridian’s Karl Miller, who says the developer has tried to design the building to fit into the neighbourhood.

Saskatoon police on Thursday released the most recent theft numbers, with 303 bicycles reported stolen since the beginning of May.

Drivers should expect delays during Hwy. 5 construction
Drivers should expect delays as construction continues on new passing lanes on Highway 5 near Humboldt.
There will be two sets of passing lanes for about 20 kilometres west of Humboldt to the junction of Highway 2, according to a Saskatchewan government news release. Construction started in late June.
Studies have shown passing lanes can reduce collisions by as much as 25 per cent at 15 per cent of the cost of full twinning, the province says.

RCMP believe two people found dead in northern Saskatchewan drowned while boating.
La Loche RCMP responded Wednesday around 3 p.m. to a report of two overdue boaters on Lac La Loche. “Conditions on the lake were extremely windy with high waves at the time,” RCMP said in a news release.

Saskatoon among 9 cities for MMIWG inquiry hearings this fall
The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls will hold hearings in Saskatoon this fall.
Nine locations were announced Thursday for hearings between September and December.
“We need to prepare ourselves for the hearings,” Chief Commissioner Marion Buller said, noting that over the next two months, staff will travel to the nine locations starting in July. The visits are to lay “critical” ground work for the hearing, Buller said.

Hope for Darrell Pura, Saskatoon guitarmaker who lost his vision
Saskatoon musicians are banding together to support local guitarmaker Darrell Pura of Pura Guitars.
His three adult children have started a Go Fund Me campaign in the hope of restoring his vision.
Within two months in the fall of 2016, Pura lost most of the sight in both eyes, possibly from a heart medication he was taking.
“It’s been really tough, mentally especially,” Pura said.
