'No one has any idea where the painting came from': The story of St. Martin's mystery painting
Not long ago Rev. Michael Webster, a minister at St. Martin’s United Church, and a group of volunteers took on the task of cleaning out the church’s archives room.
A mountain of papers were sorted through, duplicates made, and the originals forwarded to Saskatchewan United Church Archives. As the volunteers worked their way through the decades of accumulation, they uncovered a 4×8-foot oil painting.
“It’s quite a good painting,” Webster says. “On the lef -

Renee Kohlman: Stay cool this summer with pizza on the grill
It’s that time of year again when you can’t fathom the thought of turning the oven on to cook food — unless your house is equipped with air conditioning, then I suppose you are one of the lucky ones.
But for the rest of us who sweat it out for the summer, cooking need not be just salads and ice cream. Though, that doesn’t sound so bad, does it? I make good use of the barbecue in the backyard, grilling up everything from steaks to vegetables and fruit. And, now, pizza. Wit -
McBride: Americans residing in Canada are required to file U.S. income tax returns
Americans who reside in Canada must file United States income tax returns and bank account disclosure forms annually.
U.S. income tax returns
Canada’s tax filing requirements are based on residency. However, U.S. tax filing requirements are based on citizenship. American tax laws require U.S. citizens to file U.S. tax returns no matter where they reside. Therefore, a dual citizen residing in Canada must file a U.S. income tax return as well as a Canadian income tax return each year.

'I'm a little embarrassed': Justin Trudeau forgets Alberta in Canada Day speech

Save the best for last? Prime Minister Justin Trudeau gave a shoutout to every province and territory during Canada Day celebrations on Parliament Hill on Saturday, except for one: Alberta. -
Wine of the Week: Today's Shiraz is more balanced, not as sweet
Two decades ago, the wine that ravished North Americans was Shiraz, the Australian version of the Rhone grape Syrah.
It was capable of producing ripe fruity wines that tasted like jam with tremendous tannins for hardcore carnivores. Since then it has fallen out of favour, although it still has fans. The Australian aisle at the SLGA is about a quarter of what it once was.
The wines have changed in style since then, retreating from that overblown, over-ripe flavour set. These days it has become a -

Doug Cuthand: First Nations played a pivotal role in the creation of Canada
This week Canadians are celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of our nation. The myth continues that Canada was built on two founding nations — a myth that needs to be destroyed if we expect to be the inclusive country that we are selling to the world.
Canada was built on three founding nations: the French, the British and the First Nations. The First Nations’ role in the development and settlement of Canada has been overlooked and ignored in the schools and the public perce -

Heather Persson: Young writers leaped to our Canada 150 essay challenge
Reading student essays for the Leader-Post/StarPhoenix Canada 150 contest led to a sticky situation.
Turns out, there was a load of maple syrup involved.
There was also a pile of poutine, a ton of Tim Horton’s and a huge amount of hockey. But most of all, I found an inspiring degree of imagination.
The contest had students in grades 8-12 across the province writing essays on one of three topics: Imagine the ultimate Canadian action hero and describe one of his or her adventures. -

Editorial: The world needs a diverse, kind Canada
“Canadians can’t agree on what makes our country great, and one-third even hate hockey: poll.”
This is the headline that ran on an Canadian Press story earlier this week. The story goes on to describe a poll by Historica Canada that explored Canadian percepts of the nation. Turns out that consensus was not on the menu for those pulling up to the national table together for this July 1.
The pollsters asked for a single word to describe Canada. “Freedom” or &ldqu -

REVIEW: Saskatoon Summer Players hit the grail on the head in Spamalot
If you like irreverent humour and general silliness, you’ll like Spamalot a lot.
Saskatoon Summer Players’ annual megaproject takes on the 2005 Tony-winning Broadway show which was “lovingly ripped off” from the 1975 movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail, along with other Python bits too good not to reclaim.

What did Saskatchewan look like in 1867?
CBC.ca
Saskatchewan was not part of Canada in 1867. In fact, the future province was not even a Canadian province at the time. That would quickly change. Incorporating the northwest was a planned feature of the 1867 Confederation deal (section 146 of the BNA ... -
Nothing says Canada like the Maple tree, but will it grow here?
Given that today is Canada’s 150th birthday, I felt that it might be just a touch unpatriotic of me not to dedicate this column to maple trees.
And who knows, if I can spread enough ‘true patriot love’ today, a few readers might even be inspired enough to plant a maple or two in the year of our sesquicentennial.
