Public Service Advisory - Firearms - Real Vs. Fake
The Saskatoon Police have received numerous inquiries regarding firearms used in crimes that are actually air-soft pellet guns or BB guns. As you can see in the attached photo, the “fake” gun look very realistic. Can you tell which is real? When Officers go into a situation, they treat it as if they are dealing with a real, potentially lethal firearm. Firearms are viewed the same way in court; even using a “fake” gun holds the same charges as using a real gun. An armed rob -
REVIEW: Tommy Emmanuel tops off intense night of guitar mastery
It was a night to make guitar experts swoon and the rest of us feel like we’d been transported to a different galaxy.
Slide guitar savant Jack Broadbent opened Wednesday night’s show at the Broadway Theatre for the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival, displaying an aggressive, percussive style with tons of groove. For a slide, he uses a steel whisky flask – how badass is that? The sounds is raw, his singing voice pained and pleading in songs like Canned Heat’s On The Road -

Megan Praski: Miss Maple Leaf
This is the story of a Canadian superhero named Miss Maple Leaf. I created her to be a true Canadian hero by always being polite and saving the citizens of Canada.
She travels all across Canada to answer the call of evil and make things right. With her sidekick beaver named Gretzky, together they help save people in need in Canada. Miss Maple leaf was born on December 1, 1996, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Miss Maple Leaf is just her superhero name, but her real name is Claire. Claire has always b -
Leslie Bauer: Why I am proud to be Canadian
There have been many times where I have been proud to be Canadian. It could be something as small as saying sorry when you bump into someone or accidentally say “eh?” in a conversation with someone at your local Tim Hortons.
I am proud to be able to run through the wheat fields of Saskatchewan and canoe on the glacier lakes in Alberta. I love ziplining through the forests of British Columbia and Ice skating in Manitoba. I love Canada and everything that makes us Canadian. Saskatchewa -

Morgan Dean Gardiner: Mikiso-Kamohtit (Walking Eagle) takes on Flying Bannock
My ultimate Canadian action hero is Walking Eagle. The way Walking Eagle gets around is by driving his Lamborghini because Walking Eagle is just too fat to fly. Walking Eagle wants to put a stop to drugs, crime and racism and fighting around Saskatchewan. Walking Eagle lives in Ile a la Crosse First Nation with his sidekick Smudge Pan. Smudge Pan’s powers come from a hockey stick because he has a hard slap shot and some dirty wrist shots. Walking Eagle’s superpowers are seeing o -

Letter of the Day: Issues with city landfill
Issues with city landfill
Within the space of a week, contradictory articles have appeared in the StarPhoenix. On one hand, the City of Saskatoon may start charging residents for the amount of garbage collected from each home to reduce the volume of garbage being placed in the city land fill. The next article in the StarPhoenix, relating to this subject, indicates there is a revenue short fall, as a result of less garbage being dumped in the city land fill. So, once again the City Administration -
Sania Sami: And I am proud to be a Canadian …
On May 1, I woke up with a sound scattering around me because my parents were about to take the Canadian citizenship test.
The wind was blowing and the sun was shining brightly in the sky. They were excited and were wishing themselves good luck to pass the test.
For the past week, I had been helping my mom study from a book called Discover Canada. After getting ready, I wished my parents good luck and left for school. On my way, I was thinking about what is so special about this soil, the soil I -

Jessica Rosen: A journey towards Canadian pride
Ironically, the time in my life when I felt most proud to be Canadian was when one of the saddest and most challenging moments in my life occurred.
In 2012, my dad was diagnosed with the blood cancer Leukemia. From that day until his passing this 2016, he spent countless days and nights in Saskatoon’s University Hospital oncology ward, receiving many treatments and numerous medications.

Cheyanna Kidd: The true meaning of 'Canadian'
Can you relive your life in eight hundred words?
Could you capture the essence of rolling prairie wheat fields, the scale of the Rocky Mountains, the warmth of your grandmother’s smile, the unbridled rush of your first kiss, the taste of your family’s traditional dish, the laughter, the friendships, the heartbreak, and every dream and opportunity?

Xinyi Zhang: Becoming Canadian
I hear a woman’s voice through the loudspeakers, but I cannot understand what she is announcing.
My eyes act as if they have been deprived of sight. Fair toned people with light coloured hair and blue eyes pass by me and I dare not stare too long. Sometimes a stranger and I make eye contact. I turn away every time, but it is never before I see a smile that grows across his/her face.
My ears still suffer from the intense pressure, but I can still hear the planes taking off over us. My legs -
