Identifying and treating people with a serious mental illness like Justin St. Amour before they become violent might be cheaper in the long run than sending them to hospital or to jail, the medical director of Ottawa’s Inner City Health testified Tuesday at a coroner’s inquest.
“There was chaos anywhere Justin went,” said Dr. Jeff Turnbull, who quit his job as chief of staff at The Ottawa Hospital to work with the city’s poor and vulnerable on the streets.

Going out best bets, April 18 to 25: Cher says goodbye (again), and a luxury dinner for autism
Pop
Cher is at it again. Saying goodbye, that is, with her Here We Go Again tour. If this sounds familiar, it’s because she first said goodbye more than a decade ago. Back then, the show was a rhinestone-studded spectacle of musical fantasy, and we’re sure this one will be just as fabulous, with costume changes, multi-coloured wigs, mechanical gizmos and all the hits. Oh, we’re going to hear a bunch of ABBA songs, too, in support of her 26th album, a collection of ABBA covers e -

Ottawa police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect in a Valentine’s Day home invasion in the Uplands area.
Police have already charged one man and charges are pending against a second after three men forced their way into a Downpatrick Road apartment at around 10:15 p.m. on Feb. 14 and assaulted a woman.
Another person in the apartment intervened and one of the suspects pointed a gun at both victims, say police.

How prepared are National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa churches to face disasters
As French authorities continued to assess the damage to Notre-Dame Cathedral’s artworks in the aftermath of Monday’s horrific fire in Paris, some officials in Ottawa said they were fully prepared to save cultural treasures entrusted to them in the event of emergencies.
The National Gallery of Canada’s artworks are protected by an up-to-date emergency plan, in a 30-year-old building that follows strict fire codes, a spokeswoman for the gallery said Tuesday.

Spicer: Notre-Dame, the heart of Paris, will regain her glory
For three years two decades ago, I used to cycle to the garden at the back of Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris, which is where most of the flames burned this week.
I was alone on a bench with only a stray cat or two. Often I looked up at the magnificent church, sometimes circling out to the front that most tourists see. Idly, I would dream of past centuries, of the hopes and joys and tragedies of this small patch of Paris, back to Roman times – when it was a sanctuary from the dreaded -

Gatineau man faces sex charges, police believe there are more victims
Gatineau police have charged a 41-year-old man with sex crimes they allege were committed 10 years ago. Police say they also have reason to believe there are more victims and they are encouraging them to come forward.
Vincent Vachon, 41, of Gatineau, was arrested on Saturday and charged with sexual assault, sexual touching, invitation to sexual touching and child luring.

Military assessment ruling out the need for a second interim supply ship doesn’t appear to exist

Denley: Attacks from all sides on budget mean Ford's getting it right
Is Ontario Premier Doug Ford really Dalton McGuinty in disguise, or is he an evil man who hates children?
In response to Ford’s first budget, some conservative commentators have expressed surprise and disappointment that Ford did not bring in an immediate and dramatic reduction in the deficit, instead promising record spending. Those on the left argued that the budget was a broad-based attack on children and the most vulnerable, driven by Ford’s personal cruelty.
