A century-old American elm that had stood just east of Centre Block on Parliament Hill was cut down by work crews on Saturday.
Despite pleadings from local environmental groups and community associations, the tree that would have been in the middle of a construction zone was felled as part of preparatory work for the decade-long project to renovate Parliament.
The American Elm near Centre Block on Parliament Hill was cut down on Saturday.

Sunny, sunny day, with a whole bunch of rain on the way
Hope everyone enjoyed a beautiful Saturday.
Sunday will be a whole different animal.
Saturday’s temperature climbed all the way to a shorts and T-shirt high of 15.3 C, but those powerful winds you felt through the day — they were gusting up to 60 km/h — were blowing cooler air into the national capital area. And rain. Lots of it. About 30 to 40 mm are expected Sunday.
Ottawa's forecast high today is 14 C. If we reach that, it will be the first time since Oct. 19. #ottnews

Kovacs: My 'grass roots' campaign for Rideau-Rockcliffe
I am running as a candidate in the Rideau-Rockliffe ward byelection because I want to continue the tradition of strong representation and forceful advocacy established by former councillor Tobi Nussbaum and be responsive to the needs of the entire community.
Like Nussbaum, I am a lawyer by profession. I have experience in municipal, land use planning and zoning law, having worked in a municipal legal department. I have attended dozens of Ottawa City Council and committee meetings and understand -

'We can't sit back': Vittoria Trattoria to re-emerge soon as 'pop up' after ByWard Market fire
Much as Friday’s fire shocked him, Domenic Santaguida — co-owner of the heavily damaged Vittoria Trattoria restaurant in the ByWard Market — recognizes he is in some respects fortunate.
“We’ve been in business for 27 years,” he said Saturday, “so we’ve got enough working capital to support a Plan B”.
Just what that plan entails is still unclear he said but it could involve installing ‘pop up’ locations in the ByWard Market — -

Editorial: Ontario, alcohol and public health
The Ontario government seems to think the way to our hearts is through our vices – specifically through our collective thirst for booze. Yet, in its bid to make it easier for Ontarians to liquor up, the government may also be diluting the warning function communities rely on to remind them of the dangers of alcohol.

Enjoy the sun, a special weather statement has been issued
It’s going to be a beautiful day.
Enjoy it.
Because that’s all we’re getting.
Yes, the sun will be out and we’ll hit a marvellous high of 14 C.
On the back of strong winds, cooler air will move into the region and push out our blissful weather.
Tonight’s low will plummet all the way down to -2 C with those pesky winds making it feel more like -6.
Sunday’s high will eke up to 4 C and will be accompanied by either snow or rain or a mix of both. There is forecast -

Today's letters: Please, parents, don't hesitate: Vaccinate your whole family
Please, please vaccinate
Re: “Ottawa sees first measles case in three years”, April 4
Many of us are becoming more hesitant about vaccinating our children. We wonder if vaccines are really necessary. They most definitely are.
Through vaccinating your children, you are protecting your child as well as those who cannot protect themselves. There are several vulnerable groups. The first are infants. Infants cannot get the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine until they are 12 months old. T -
Keller-Herzog: Ottawa must show it has a plan to fight climate change
Recently, a stunning 1.4 million children walked out of class in 2,233 cities and towns in 128 countries to protest lack of action by governments, political leaders and adults in general on runaway climate change. “We need a whole new way of thinking,” said 16-year old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg. “We proved that it does matter what you do and that no one is too small to make a difference.”

Damage from ByWard Market restaurant fire pegged at $2M
Water poured down the front steps of Vittoria Trattoria restaurant late Friday in the devastating aftermath of a four-alarm fire that gutted the historic building in the ByWard Market.
Two fire investigators were on scene to determine the cause of the blaze, which is believed to have started in the roof area of the century-old, two-storey stone building.
Roofers were doing work on the building when the fire broke out Friday morning, according to Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, who expressed immense rel -
"Revolutionary" new funding to shake up Ontario's colleges and universities
Ontario’s plan to tie funding for colleges and universities to their performance is a shakeup that could be revolutionary, one education expert says.
The province’s plan to become a national leader in “outcomes-based funding” is a good idea in principle, Alex Usher, president of the consulting firm Higher Education Strategy Associates, said Friday.
“But the devil is in the details.”

The rookie jail guard who saw Justin St. Amour preparing to hang himself in his cell at the Ottawa Carleton Detention Centre in November 2016 testified Friday that he warned his sergeant that the troubled inmate was threatening suicide and had made a rope from his bed sheet.
