Saturday was a perfect day for the Vanier Sugar Fest, where the syrup was still as sweet as when the event began in 1987.
Hundreds were drawn to the Muséoparc at 300 Pères-Blancs Ave. to watch old-timey sap gathering, listen to tunes or to take in dancing exhibitions, arts and competitions, or to just stroll through the woods.
If you missed Saturday’s activities, the Sugar Fest is on again Sunday, starting at 10 a.m. SharePhoto gallery: Vanier Sugar Fest, Saturday, April 6, 2

Firefighter's steampunk lamps among antique and vintage show treasures
Brian Killeen races to crashes and blazes with lights flashing when he’s on shift as a lieutenant with the Val-des-Monts fire department.
Off duty, he takes his time, cruising crumbling barns, abandoned factories and country auctions to find the industrial parts and cast off agriculture machinery of a bygone age. He imagines them into entirely new creations: “steampunk”-style lamps lit by the mellow golden light of vintage Edison-style bulbs.

Why apologies matter: 'Words can move mountains'
Seeking a papal apology all these years later might seem a fool’s errand to some, but to David McCann, who’s been trying to get the Vatican to apologize for the abuse he and hundreds of others suffered at training schools in Ontario, it can be an important step toward healing.
“Words can mean absolutely nothing, and words can move mountains,” he says. “An apology is an acknowledgment that a wrong has occurred and that you can’t change it, but you are sorry tha -
Waiting on the Pope: Why one Canadian survivor of sexual abuse says an apology from the Pontiff would matter
The dimly lit conference room looked like so many others — a long table with nameplates and microphones, surrounded by drab olive drapes and beige carpet.
On this particular Thursday, however, two things stood out: a painting of the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus on the wall behind the head table, and the speaker whose back they appeared to be looking at: Pope Francis.
Wearing his white cassock, the Pope faced the tiered rows of cardinals, archbishops, bishops and other clergy in their respect -

A bit of drizzle and we're finally hitting double digits
We’re in for a decent dose of wet weather over the next few days.
But we’re finally hitting a high in double digits.
It’s spring, Ottawa. It’s finally spring.
And in typical spring fashion, expect clouds and drizzle to start your weekend followed by a brief blast of sunshine.
Today’s high should hit 11 C by early afternoon.
And although sub-zero temperatures are not out of our lives quite yet, tonight’s low will only flirt with zero.

Bregha: Why Ottawa's Pearson House is worth saving
Lester B. Pearson won Canada’s first and only Nobel Peace Prize in 1957 for his contribution to resolving the Suez Canal crisis. At the time, Pearson lived with his wife, Maryon, in a modest duplex at 231 Cobourg Ave. in Sandy Hill. The house went through different hands until the Ugandan government purchased it in the late 1980s to serve as its High Commission to Canada. About four years ago, a lack of proper maintenance forced the High Commission to move to an office on Sparks Street. Th -

Paperwork kept OC Transpo worker out of harm's way in 1999 shootings
Rhéaume Laplante and Harry Schoenmakers had planned to ski together on the Friday after Easter.
Instead, Laplante attended his friend’s funeral after Schoenmakers had been one of four OC Transpo workers gunned down three days earlier, on April 6, 1999, by a former colleague.
