Obit: From PMs to the poor, David Scott was the deft advocate in the bow tie
As a lawyer, David Scott made a living defending prime ministers, but he made a life advocating for paupers, never forgetting it all began with home.
Family and colleagues say that, even as he lay dying in hospital, Scott — a lion in the city’s legal circles for 50 years — was making phone calls to support funding for Pro Bono Ontario, a charity he helped found that has assisted 140,000 poor clients since 2001.
His death March 21 also marks the end of four generations of Scotts -
Montreal dining diary II: Lauding the lunches at La Chronique and Graziella
With so much attention paid these days to bright young chefs and their questing, often head-turning culinary creations, I wonder sometimes if mid-career chefs, whose food, for all its elegance, hews closer to traditional exemplars, can wind up unfairly overlooked.
Given that concern, I was all the more pleased with two fine lunches during the Montréal En Lumière cultural and culinary festival in February. As a guest of the festival and Montreal Tourism, I enjoyed splendid mid-day m -
Doctor disciplined for sexual relationship with Pembroke patient
Nine years after he had sex with a vulnerable young Pembroke woman he’d seen as a patient just two weeks before — and left $200 on her bedside table after the encounter — a doctor has finally been disciplined in Ontario.
The irony for Dr. Mehdi Horri, 53, is that he had already lost his licence for nine months as punishment in Saskatchewan, where he now practises, before the Ontario penalty took effect.
The convoluted story of Horri’s misdeeds and punishment began in 2010 -

By now, it should come as no surprise — especially to Canadian jazz fans who claim his as one of their own — when saxophonist Seamus Blake puts out another great record.

Reviewed Thursday
It’s not often we’re the first to see a bold new adaptation of a ballet that’s more than a century old. First performed in 1841, Giselle is one of the most popular full-length story ballets, a timeless tale of love, betrayal and redemption that begins in a country village and ends in a supernatural world of ghostly spirits.

Summertime alpine luge may be coming to Camp Fortune
Camp Fortune is hoping to add a new summertime ride: a single-person alpine luge which would run down a monorail track between the Clifford and Marshall ski runs.
It would be similar to a luge recently opened at Mount Revelstoke Resort, which reaches a top speed of 42 km/h. The Revelstoke ride is called the Pipe Mountain Coaster.
Construction could take place this summer and fall, though the National Capital Commission needs to give permission first. The matter is on the NCC’s agenda for i -

Construction crews continued Friday to tear down the former Sears store at the Carlingwood Shopping Centre.
Once the pillar store of Carlingwood, the Sears store in the west end mall at 2165 Carling Ave., intersecting Woodroffe Avenue, was built in the 1950s.
Sears closed the store in January 2018 as part of a corporate downsizing that took place across the country.
Crews began demolishing the old Sears store at the Carlingwood Mall this week.

Kennedy: Trudeau's not a fake feminist, despite how his foes paint him
Well, that’s it, then. Apparently, Justin Trudeau is a fake feminist.
It’s all over the online commentariat. Conservative MPs Lisa Raitt, Candice Bergen and Michelle Rempel have declared that he is. Daughters of the Vote in Ottawa recently turned their backs on him (or at least 15 per cent did). And conservative columnists Licia Corbella and Margaret Wente have condemned his hypocrisy in expelling from the Liberal caucus what Corbella calls “two strong women … of conscie -

I discovered that a treatment for autism existed that could help my daughter develop and grow, but it was neither provided by our public health care system nor covered by medicare. The treatm -

Minto returns to Kanata this spring with the launch of not one but two projects: Morgan’s Creek in Kanata North and the re-opening of Arcadia across from the Canadian Tire Centre.

Icy sidewalks pose real danger
Re: Disabled man down, wheelchair trapped in sidewalk pothole, April 2.
On Feb. 5, Stephen St. Denis’s wheelchair caught on an ice patch, spun and flipped over in the middle of the bus lane on Albert Street. St. Denis was not struck by an approaching vehicle but that was thanks to good luck and despite the poor maintenance of the sidewalk.
In late November, 2018, my daughter was driving her wheelchair along the sidewalk on Nicholas Street. The wheelchair skid -

Roberts: Let's talk about how we can ease the burden of caregivers
I remember driving down the road one day with my brother, Dillon, in the back seat. It was a sunny day, and we had the windows wide-open, the wind rushing through the car.
Dillon, as many people know, has autism. Some might question why a teenage boy of 19 would be driving down the road with his hands flapping out the window. But for me, this was pretty normal. Dillon loved the rush of air passing through his fingers.
As we motored down the road, I glanced into the mirror and noticed something s -
