Ottawa Public Health confirmed Thursday the city’s first case of measles in three years. No information was made public about the person’s age, gender or where he or she travelled.
Officials are asking people who were present at several locatio

Boyle Trial: Caitlan Coleman's worried sister warned the FBI to prepare a 'safety net,' court hears
Caitlan Coleman’s sister says Joshua Boyle demeaned his wife, instructed her how to wear a hijab, and expected her to look after the children at all times — even when she was sick in hospital.
JoAnn Rotenberry told court on Thursday that, after a text message exchange with her sister in November 2017, she became so concerned for Coleman’s safety that she contacted the FBI.
Those texts were not read in court, but Rotenberry said that in them, her sister vented about her relation -
City prepares for spring flooding with help from a slow snow melt
The City of Ottawa has started its flood watch as temperatures rise and water from the thick layer of snow slowly flows into the waterways.
City hall has a heightened awareness of waterway levels in the spring after communities along the Ottawa River were flooded in 2017.
One of the recommendations flowing from a review of the city’s response to the floods was to improve the communications, which led to more advance briefings, like the one held Thursday with Mayor Jim Watson and the heads -

Jail guards 'failed miserably' to save suicidal Ottawa inmate, mother says ahead of inquest
The mother of a man who hanged himself in his cell at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre says she blames jail guards for her son’s death.
Justin St. Amour had been taken off suicide watch and placed in the jail’s medical ward on Nov. 30, 2016 when he told a guard he needed to see the guard’s supervisor or he would kill himself. The supervisor never came and less than an hour later guards found St. Amour hanging from his bedsheet. He died eight days later in hospital.

Dog-whistling politicians don’t usually inspire great art. But inspiration can be a strange thing.

Goose fight! Breeding-time battle captured at Mud Lake
Take a gander at this knock-down, drag-out fight. And is it the goose whose affections they’re fighting over who arrives to egg them on?
“Canada geese can be quite aggressive during mating season,” said nature lover Sharad Gupta, who captured the epic battle on Mud Lake at the west-end Britannia Conservation Area Wednesday morning, and shared it on Twitter.
If it was a breeding battle Gupta captured, the stakes are high: Canada geese breed for life, although they’ll take -

The Christmas ornament — a gift from his aunt and uncle — is a metaphor of sorts for Jonathan, a boy who was at once fragile and full of light.

Diochnos: Why Ontario should stop cutting corners on education
If there is one thing Ontario’s government should learn from new student protests against education cuts, it’s that high school students are already plenty resilient. They are willing to stand up and speak out against Education Minister Lisa Thompson’s narrow-minded and unconvincing attempts to change Ontario’s education system. That resilience is important because it represents the more intangible benefits of education, which are being overlooked.

Adam: Ottawa city council failed us on LRT Stage 2 procurement
The push for the City of Ottawa’s auditor general to investigate the controversial Stage 2 LRT procurement process is like shutting the barn door after the horse has bolted.

Even if the auditor general found some impropriety or wrongdoing in the procurement, it would make no difference. The SNC-Lavalin &ldqu -

Excuses, excuses as traffic cop hears some doozies
It’s lame excuse Thursday!
Const. Jon Hall heard some doozies while handing out tickets Thursday morning in a 40 km/h zone near Louis Riel High School on Bearbrook Road that commuters like to use to zip around traffic.
The city police traffic section laid nine speeding charges for lead-foots going between 71 and 85 km/h in the 40 km/h school zone.
The very lamest excuse? “I didn’t get the memo.”

Intruder harasses Glebe students in 'disconcerting' incident
Police confirm they’re investigating after the school’s principal reported to parents that a young male entered Glebe Collegiate Institute Wednesday and was “harassing” female students and “made inappropriate gestures of a sexual nature.”
The school’s resource officer headed to Glebe to tackle the incident at 10:18 a.m., city police said. Further information about his investigation wasn’t yet available Thursday morning.

One year later: 'I wake up thinking of him,' says Jonathan Pitre's mother, Tina Boileau
On a cherry tree next to Jonathan Pitre’s gravestone hangs a single glass angel.
The Christmas ornament — a gift from his aunt and uncle — is a metaphor of sorts for Jonathan, a boy who was at once fragile and full of light.
“I wake up thinking of him,” says Jonathan’s mother, Tina Boileau. “I miss his voice, but I’m lucky enough that I can hear it because he’s online everywhere: I can hear his laugh, I can hear his voice. But it doesn’ -

Today's letters: On the ousting of Wilson-Raybould and Philpott
Canadians are not stupid, Mr. Trudeau
Re: ‘The trust … has been broken,” April 3.
What is wrong with the Trudeau government? Does it not see that by kicking out Jody Wilson-Raybould and Jane Philpott, it is just adding fuel to the fire of looking guilty and adding to the cover-up? What is wrong with this country that there is no ongoing investigation into this affair? Why is there a shift as to the ethics of a taped phonecall rather than what went on to make Wilson-Raybould fe -
King: Let’s combat the scourge of poverty in Ottawa
In 2018, a report by Campaign 2000 examined the level of child poverty in Canada. My area of the city, Rideau-Rockcliffe, was ranked one of the most highly impoverished in the country, with nearly 6,000 children living below the poverty line.
Levels of poverty like these are shameful and are the result of a lack of political will. That is why I am running in the April 15 byelection, because I know that our municipal government can do better. After years of underfunding, the city has finally anno -
