Beginning May 11, Interprovincial Lottery Corp. will be changing the popular Lotto Max lottery to add a second day and increase the jackpot to a maximum of $70 million.
The lottery will be run on Tuesday as well as Friday. Lotto Max is a national lottery.
The regulator of lotteries, which is owned jointly by five provincial lottery corporations, will still require players to match seven numbers, however numbers available to be chosen in the lottery will now included those between 1 and 50. Lotto

Ottawa high school students to cut class to join provincewide protest against Ford's education policies
Students in some Ottawa high schools plan to walk out of class on Thursday as part of a provincewide protest against education policies announced by Ontario’s Progressive Conservative government.
The hour-long protest could involve tens of thousands of Ontario students.
Organizers said students at more than 600 schools have registered their interest, including 34 schools in Ottawa, although it’s difficult to know how widespread the protest will be.
On the list of things students are -
Claire's cosmetics recalled for possible asbestos contamination
Health Canada issued a recall on Tuesday for cosmetics that may be contaminated with asbestos.
The affected products are Claire’s eyeshadows, compact powder and contour palette. According to Health Canada, almost 5,000 of the Chinese-manufactured products were sold in Canada between October 2016 and March 2019. Testing indicated possible asbestos fibres in samples from one lot of each product. As of March 26, however, the company had received no reports of incidents in Canada.

The Gatineau police officer who pleaded guilty to unauthorized use of a computer for viewing police databases for personal purposes received an absolute discharge in court on Tuesday.

Evicted Heron Gate residents file human rights complaint over landlord's 'hyper-gentrification'
Fourteen former tenants of Heron Gate Village have launched a human rights complaint about their eviction, claiming the landlord forced them out of their racialized and immigrant community in a “hyper-gentrification” of the area in order to build high-income housing for white residents.
The application was made Monday with the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal and claims the landlord, Timbercreek, is discriminatory in its plan for the property and that the City of Ottawa, which is also n -

Deif and Neve: Two 'Snowden refugees' are safe. What about the rest?
Canadians across the country welcomed the news last week that Vanessa Rodel and her young daughter, Keana, had finally found shelter in Montreal. They are two of “Snowden’s angels,” asylum-seekers whose kindness in sheltering the U.S. National Security Agency whistleblower in Hong Kong placed them in the world’s eye. Had they been deported to the Philippines, a dangerous abuser waited for them. Their resettlement in Canada assured their physical safety and allows Keana to -
Fraudsters pretending to be RCMP officers, Mounties warn
Grifters are “spoofing” the Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s phone number then posing as police officers and demanding cash for purportedly unpaid taxes when the mark answers.
Victims are threatened with arrest, the Mounties warned Tuesday.
Caller ID spoofing allows scammers to make it look like their calls come from familiar or local sources, tricking people into picking up and trusting the caller.

Cohen: Canada's SNC melodrama baffles a world actually in crisis
For years, dogs have been jumping off the Overtoun Bridge in Dumbarton, Scotland. By one count, 600 dogs have leapt into the gorge below.
Some 50 of them have jumped to their deaths. There is no obvious reason for this canine suicide.
“Some say there are rational explanations involving the terrain and the scents of mammals in the animals that may drive the dogs into a frenzy,” reports The New York Times. “Other explanations take on a more paranormal tone.”

Denley: Why wait decades to shape a better Ottawa?
I don’t envy city councillors and staff trying to interest the public in the city’s latest Official Plan process. Any pitch that inevitably includes the words “official,” “plan” and “process” is a tough sell.
As part of the exercise, staff and their consultants have attempted to divine what forces will shape the city in the future. That’s the subject of a 54-page report called Ottawa Next, Beyond 2036. Should that constitute insufficient read -

Today's letters: Carbon tax will have an impact on Canadians
The carbon tax is going to cost us
Starting Monday, the cost of gas has gone up 4.4 cents per litre due to the federal government’s $20-per-tonne carbon tax. It’s proposed the tax will increase to $50 per tonne by 2022, so it’s reasonable to expect a corresponding increase in gas prices of 11 cents per litre, using current numbers.

Waterproofing 'non-conformance' flagged during inspections of LRT tunnel in 2018
Taxpayers might have to live with a leaky LRT tunnel, along with the threat of water accumulating in stations and damaging infrastructure, and there’s not much the City of Ottawa can do about it.
An inspection report filed last year suggests there are areas of the Confederation Line tunnel where the “waterstop” material wasn’t installed properly.
“Varieties of issues were identified with waterstop installation that may compromise their effectiveness,” a Rideau -
Egan: Hello 911? Disabled man down, wheelchair trapped in sidewalk pothole

Carleton students say sex assault survey raises 'red flags' about school policy
A week after the release of a survey indicating more than 1,300 Carleton University students had been sexually assaulted during the 2017-2018 school year, a group of graduate students says the university should do more to acknowledge the extent of the issue.
“What is troubling to us is how Carleton University refuses to acknowledge the breadth of sexual violence on our campus,” wrote members of the Graduate Students’ Association consent culture committee.
