An alert Gatineau police officer may have headed off a serious incident Thursday when he used his unmarked cruiser to block a car headed the wrong way down busy Maloney Boulevard with people chasing it on foot.
“Because the situation looked wrong, the (officer drove) his vehicle in such a way as to stop the … (wrong-way) vehicle and, in doing so, protect the public,” Gatineau police said in a release.

A 22-year-old Gatineau man is facing charges including armed robbery in a convenience store heist on Walkley Road last month, police said Thursday.

Fire victim set Gatineau apartment blaze, police conclude
The person who died in a blaze at a Gatineau apartment building early Monday was the one who set the fire, police have concluded as they wrapped up their investigation.
They can’t determine if the person, whom police are not identifying, intended to die in the Robinson Street blaze, a spokeswoman said Thursday.
She would not say how the fire was set.
Police also found another body in the building but say that the person had died of natural causes unrelated to the fire.
