A female police officer who was attacked by a dog in Vanier on Friday morning shot and killed the animal in self-defence.
The officer was taken to hospital.
The attack happened near the west end of Deschamps Avenue, police said. A spokeswoman said officers were there to help a “partner agency,” but she wouldn’t identify it or explain why police were needed. She said the police “partners” involved were not paramedics or firefighters.

The peoples' verdict: 'To hell with' the NHL on LeBreton
Whispers in the wind. It seems Trinity Development founder John Ruddy and partner Graham Bird are still very much interested in participating in the re-launch of the LeBreton Flats project.
If that’s true, they will be very interested in the results of an opinion survey about LeBreton’s next steps which will be outlined March 7 by the National Capital Commission.
An online survey of 772 Ottawa residents by Ekos Research Associates this past week suggests there is a significant majori -

Is LeBreton Flats cursed?
That noise you just heard was Robert Randall, now about 250 years old, snorting a great guffaw from his Drummond Hill Cemetery grave in Niagara Falls.
“LeBreton Flats?” you can hear him thunder across the miles and centuries. “Let me tell you about LeBreton Flats! IT’S CURSED!”
If you run your fingers over Randall’s headstone (he spelled his name Randal in later years), you might still be able to make out the inscription that has been worn almost smooth by lif -

Rubin: Two Canadian justice ministers, two takes on transparency
What a contrast in testimonies between one former justice minister/attorney general and one new justice minister in front of parliamentary committees this week.
New Justice Minister David Lametti came to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee Wednesday to hesitantly discuss C-58, the government’s weak access to information legislation. At the same time, former justice minister Jody Wilson-Raybould was giving forceful testimony at the House of Commons Justice Committee.

As a fan, Martin Burtt describes himself as “fairly hard-core.”
Every year since 2014, he’s bought four Ottawa Fury FC season tickets. He’s sat in the stands next to many of the same fans through three campaigns for the Fury in the North American Soccer League and two more in the United Soccer League, and he’ll probably see them again at USL contests in 2019.

City opts to ditch beeping snow-clearing machines, go with 'whoosh' sound instead
The city has had enough of beeping snow machines.
After reviewing a pilot project involving 62 snow-removal vehicles operating in central-Ottawa communities last winter, fleet staff want to use the “whooshing” back-up warning alarms instead of the annoying back-up beeping alarms.
The 62-vehicle pilot project involved 35 city-owned vehicles and 27 leased units.

A hint of spring forecast, with just a bit of snow for Saturday
It could just be battle fatigue, but weather forecasts seem to be looking a little spring-ish.
Take Friday, for example.
OK, it started with a wind chill wakeup of about -20 in many parts of the capital.
But the sun is expected to come out Friday morning and lead to a high of about -2 C.
Clouds are expected to roll in Friday night, with a brisk low of -14 C. Not great, but better than it has been.
And, yes, snow is expected to break out around noon on Saturday but the weather office’s best -

“Please avoid the area and plan an alternate route,” officers asked.
Elsewhere, OPP said major arteries were slightly lighter than usual, although the normal westbound delays were present on the Queensway.
Meanwhile, OC Transpo detoured routes travelling -
Bagnall: The damage done by RendezVous LeBreton's failure
When a partnership as consequential as RendezVous LeBreton blows up, as it did Wednesday, the knock-on effects are many. No matter how the National Capital Commission proceeds from here, key players in the city will be paying for this failure for years to come.
Let’s start with reputations.
With their failure to come to terms after six weeks of mediation, Trinity Development founder John Ruddy and Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk not only dismissed a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be -
How to navigate Canada's new Food Guide without breaking the bank
Health Canada’s new Food Guide continues to stir up conversations across the country, as Canadians grapple with new nutritional science that has, for some, drastically altered our dinner plates.Dairy has been eliminated as an exclusive food group, and plant proteins have been given favour over animal sources, with recommendations to limit saturated fats, and fill up on fibre-filled and nutrient dense plant-based foods more often.
For many Canadians, though, the idea of ditching ground beef -

Sens fan: 'I'm not going to give up on these guys'
Sheri Miller’s friends have told her she’s no longer allowed to buy a Senators jersey or T-shirt with a player’s name on it. Ever time she does, she says, that player gets traded. She’s sort of the black widow of sports fans.
At home, she and her husband, Al, have a ton of red-and-white jerseys and T-shirts in their closet, some signed, some game-worn: Daniel Alfredsson, Kyle Turris, Matt Duchene, Ryan Dzingel, Mika Zibanejadand, Mark Stone, Mike Condon, Colin Greening an -

Approve LRT Phase 2 deal fast or costs will rise more, planner warns
City councillors need to approve a deal on Phase 2 of the LRT fast or the cost is likely to rise even higher, a senior city staffer said Thursday night.
The proposed deal would already cost $1.24 billion more than the city’s estimate, while shutting down the Trillium Line for 28 months beginning next year. And while details only reached council last week, its vote is scheduled for next Wednesday.
Some councillors and residents have wondered aloud whether the time to study and discuss such -
