The West Carleton Warriors are now among three finalists with a chance to win $100,000 for the charity of their choice, and say the money would go toward disaster relief for their tornado-ravaged community of Dunrobin.
The Warriors beat out 300 teams earlier this month to make it into the semifinals of the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup. The cup evaluates the performance of peewee hockey teams off the ice and in their communities — the idea being that good deeds help make great players.

Improving health care by “looking outside the walls of the hospital” is how Dr. Paul Roumeliotis views a new study by the United Way that examines the needs and vulnerabilities of seniors living in rural areas surrounding Ottawa.
As medical officer of health for the Eastern Ontario Health Unit, which covers the mostly rural region between Ottawa and the Quebec border, Roumeliotis says the type of social services needed across the sprawling area varies from place to place. He says the -

Rachlis: Oh, the hardships of a Caribbean vacation in the winter
My friend back in Ottawa recently sent me a photo of the ice house she had built with frozen coloured water blocks from plastic containers. You’re lucky, I replied. I just can’t keep the ice in my drinks from melting – just one of the hardships at our all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean.
That got me thinking that I really should share all my difficulties so that you understand what I’m going through down here while you cope with snow and frostbite. (I check the Canadian -

Renovation Transformation: Careful thought brought 1980s Centretown reno into the new millennium
Even an award winning home can’t stand the test of time.
At least that’s the case for a three-storey, loft-style house in Ottawa’s Centretown neighborhood. It was built over a century ago and underwent a renovation in the 1980s winning a Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association honour.
Enough of its charm remained to attract homeowners Jeff Taylor and Derek Vollrath. It’s the couple’s first home together.

Possible further LRT delay looms over transit budget debate
OC Transpo’s Draft 2019 budget, approved by the city’s transit commission Wednesday, promised a list of service improvements that address many of the concerns about bus reliability, capacity and coverage raised by transit users in recent months.
However, as Gloucester-Southgate Coun. Diane Deans pointed out, “this budget is built on the assumption – I think fair to say, false assumption – that there’s going to be a handover March 31.”

Egan: How winter-ready is our LRT system after snow plow mishap?
Only seven weeks before the handover deadline for the $2.1-billion LRT system — and a week before a crippling snowstorm — a specialized rail-plow malfunctioned and struck vital transmission equipment on the track.
It is further evidence the city’s keystone public-transit initiative, to be transferred from builder Rideau Transit Group on March 31, will not only miss the deadline but may have shortcomings only uncovered in winter testing under extreme weather conditions.

Sen. Lois Wilson: Canada should re-activate relations with North Korea
Peace talks for the Korean Peninsula between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jung-un are set to resume next week in Vietnam. This second Trump-Kim summit represents a critical window for progress towards peace. The international community, including Canada, should be fully engaged with both Koreas to ensure that peace is made.
Coincidently, it was 18 years ago this February that Canada first established formal diplomatic relations with North Korea. Canada chose to do -

Gatineau paraplegic takes on Quebec tax agency — and wins
It took him more than three years, but a Gatineau paraplegic won the right to deduct expenses associated with an elevator he had installed in his home in 2011 and 2012.
Quebec Court Judge Serge Laurin accepted an appeal by David Shallhorn — the victim of a 1981 motorcycle accident — to overturn a 2015 tax assessment by the Quebec Revenue Agency.
The tax agency had argued that Shallhorn was entitled to deductions of less than $1,000 over the two years the elevator was built — no -

Nine Ottawa shoe stores expected to close in Payless bankruptcy
Nine Ottawa stores belonging to Payless ShoeSource are expected to close in the next few months after the company filed for bankruptcy in the United States.
Payless has 248 stores across Canada, and 2,500 stores in North America.
The company said in a news release after the filing on Monday that it expects these outlets will begin shutting down at the end of March though it intends for “many stores (to) remain open through the end of May.”
“Over the years, we have had highs and -
Ottawa police to come up with new background check fee structure
Less than two months after the Ottawa Police Service began charging all city-wide employees to recover the true cost of a police background check, the police board chair is looking to scrap the model approved by her predecessor.
Chair Coun. Diane Deans instructed police to once again present fee options earlier this month, at the exact time that the force was trying to solidify this year’s budget.
Chief Charles Bordeleau presented those options to the board’s finance and audit commit -
Prospect of further LRT delay hangs over transit commission budget debate, proposed bus service improvements
Until Ottawa’ -
United We Roll returns to Hill for last protest before returning home
The United We Roll convoy returned to Parliament Hill for a second day of protest Wednesday, a little less united, in number at least, than on Tuesday.
Fewer than 100 people showed up for the final day before reversing their trucks and steering their convoy back west. Those who were there, though, were just as committed as when the convoy set out from Red Deer, Alta., last Thursday to deliver its so-called pro-industry, anti-globalism message to Prime Minister Trudeau and his Liberal government. -
Ottawa Police Service budget still a 'shell game,' says councillor
Ottawa police have found a way to make up a $2.4-million shortfall in their proposed 2019 budget, but even still one police board member is calling the revised draft budget a “shell game” that will most likely rely on a city bailout.
The force previously tabled a budget that came in at the three-per-cent cap dictated by Mayor Jim Watson, but only with what was a controversial $4.8-million request for funding from the city’s reserves. Watson quickly halved that request, with the -
Public comments sought for legal pot shop on York Street in ByWard Market
Residents and the City of Ottawa have until March 6 to comment on a proposed legal cannabis store on York Street in the ByWard Market.
One of the Ontario pot-shop lottery winners has applied for a licence to open the store under the name Byward Market Cannabis. The storefront will also include the name of Fire & Flower, the Alberta chain of retail cannabis shops that has a branding and licensing deal with the lottery winner.
Artist renderings of the store show an airy, boutique-like interior -
Cannabis ventures could have been part of reconciliation, conference hears
A panel of federal bureaucrats got an earful at a national Indigenous cannabis and hemp conference in Ottawa on Wednesday.
The message: Getting a slice of the cannabis industry should have been part of Canada’s reconciliation with its Indigenous peoples — but that opportunity has been squandered.
The three-day conference attracted about 300 attendees from Indigenous communities and businesses from across the country. It is aimed at offering networking opportunities and addressing pol -
