MacDougall: Why Justin Trudeau will not sacrifice his PMO come hell or SNC-Lavalin
When Justin Trudeau was leader of Canada’s third-largest party in the House of Commons, he had big opinions on the Prime Minister’s Office and how it functioned.
According to Trudeau, Stephen Harper’s PMO (of which I was a part) was too secretive, too controlling and too partisan. “The boys in short pants” (as we were known) were running amok manhandling elected members and clubbing bureaucrats in the manner of baby seals (I paraphrase, but lightly).

LeBlanc: Don't make uOttawa students choose between books and food
For a year and a half, I worked at the food bank at the University of Ottawa.
It was extremely rewarding work, but it was also all-consuming. Keeping the food bank open five days a week without full-time staff was very difficult, and I was always unloading deliveries or trekking across town to pick up bread.
Even though roughly 300 to 400 students a month depend on the food bank, including many with children, the food bank only has stable funding until April 30. If funding is not secured on time -
Ottawa Hospital's emergency psych units 'softened' after suicide
The Ottawa Hospital has “softened” the look of its emergency psychiatric unit in response to a year-long campaign by the grieving parents of a mentally ill wedding photographer who feared its windowless rooms.
Ryan Parent, 37, suffered from depression and anxiety. He took his own life at home in November 2017.
Five months before he died, Parent spent 56 hours in the psychiatric emergency services (PES) unit at the Civic campus while waiting for a bed to open on the psychiatric ward. -

How will Ontario's cannabis shops work? Here's what's coming to a corner near you
Here’s a safe prediction about the design of Ottawa’s first legal cannabis shop: It will resemble a trendy boutique.
The landlord of Superette, the proposed shop in the heart of Wellington West Village, describes it as “high-end retail.”
After all, the middle-income and affluent residents in the neighbourhood are the store’s target demographic, says Derek Noble, owner of Huntington Property Group, which owns the five-storey building at 1306 Wellington St. West, betw -
Canopy Growth sales quadruple on pot legalization
A lot was riding on Canopy Growth’s first (nearly) full quarter in which recreational pot was legal — we’re talking the three months ended Dec. 31. Anxious investors have been keen for evidence Canopy Growth really is the country’s biggest producer of recreational cannabis products and is building an organization that can supply the fast-developing global market in medical marijuana. How else to justify the Smiths Falls firm’s extravagant market value of $21 billion -

The United We Roll! convoy left Red Deer, Alta., on Thursday morning on its 4,000-kilometre journey to the capital. The drivers are upset about the stalled Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, as well as federal bills C-69, which overhauls Canada’s environmental assessment laws, and C-48, which r -
Egan: OCH tenant wakes to hot, black water spewing from radiator
It’s mid-morning on Valentine’s Day and Marie Trudel is sitting on a recliner, wrapped in a Red Cross blanket, tight as a sardine in a friend’s apartment, wondering when she’ll ever get home.
Romance, we safely say, is not in the air.
Trouble arrived Jan. 29, at about 8:30 a.m., when she heard a loud pop in her bedroom — the upstairs neighbour thought it was a gun going off — and hot, black, slimy water started to gush from the radiator.
Within seconds, water -
'The most exciting thing happening in this city' — Committee seeks engagement on new official plan
On the subject of legal pot or the future of a roof-mounted plastic cow in Orléans, Ottawa residents have made their opinions known. Not so much – at least not historically – on the development of an official plan that serves as the blueprint for Ottawa’s future.
And that’s a problem, planning committee members heard Thursday.
