The third Ottawa Ice Dragon Boat Festival brought 125 teams onto the ice at Dow’s Lake as part of the middle weekend of Winterlude activities.
Entries for the first 100 teams sold out in less than 10 minutes on Oct. 1, with another block of 25 additional spaces added in November.
It was also announced at that time that the Ottawa event would constitute the first IIDBF World Club Crew Dragon Boat Championships, with entries from Canada, China, New Zealand, Ukraine and the United States

Man charged, victim with life-threatening injuries following Lowertown stabbing
Ottawa police central criminal investigators continued on Saturday to probe a Lowertown stabbing that left one man on life support in hospital and another charged with aggravated assault.
Ottawa police responded to the stabbing around 4:20 p.m. Friday and found a man in his 40s bleeding outside an Ottawa Community Housing apartment building at 380 Murray St.
The man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was on life support Friday, but as of Saturday afternoon was listed in sta -

Radar upgrades for Halifax-class frigates and other news on defence contracts
Here are some updates on defence and aerospace industry contracts and appointments, that I outlined in the latest issue of Esprit de Corps magazine:
The Canadian government has awarded a contract to Saab Microwave Canada for radar upgrades on the Halifax-class frigates. The $21.7 million contract is to procure a modern electronically-stabilized antenna set for the Sea Giraffe 180 radar, already installed on the frigates. The contract includes an option to acquire 12 more antenna sets, which -
Search for Susan Kuplu's body on 'operational pause'
After an intensive two-week search for Susan Kuplu’s remains in a city landfill site, police are taking a “brief operational pause” to give officers and equipment operators some rest.
What began as a missing persons case in early January turned into an Ottawa police homicide probe with murder charges laid against Kuplu’s teen daughter, Lennese Kublu, and Lennese’s boyfriend, Dwight Brown.
Kuplu, 37, was last seen by her probation officer during a meeting at the -

Bundle up and get out and enjoy the sunshine
If you love winter, this might be the perfect weekend for you. It will be chilly and a bit windy, but the sun will be shining.
Saturday’s forecast high of -8 C and a brisk west wind of 30 hm/h, gusting to 50 will make it feel more like -22.
At least the wind won’t be as bad as Friday.
With a max gust of 75km/h, today is #Ottawa's windiest Feb 8th since records began in 1956. #OttWeather pic.twitter.com/LKvlUfNsFy

Editorial: How the city of Ottawa should use affordable housing funds
Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson is usually cautious with city budgets, and the 2019 version follows the pattern – with one exception. It contains a chunk of new money for affordable housing: $15 million atop the $111 million the city already allocates to deal with housing and homelessness. Will the cash make a major difference?
Affordable housing advocates think so. Councillors Mathieu Fleury and Catherine McKenna, for instance, praised the initiative. “This should provide a runway to s -

Today's letters: City shouldn't dip into reserves for core activities
Tax increase should match city spending
Re: City taps reserve funds, Feb. 7.
There are some very good initiatives in this year’s City of Ottawa budget: funding for housing, crossing guards, investments in crime prevention, money for better snow removal, and more. But using reserve money to paper over the difference in what a three per cent tax increase brings in and the actual cost of running the city is bad public policy.
Why? Because taking $9 million from reserves to pay for ongoing exp -
Egan: A month after the deadly day, Route 269 finds the ordinary
They died on a wintry Friday like this, very near this hour, after leaving from this bus stop — or one just like it — set in a windy canyon on the Mackenzie King Bridge between the Rideau Centre and the National Defence building.
Just after 3 p.m., here comes Route 269, the sun already low and almost blinding. A crowd clambers on, bundled like winter warriors. Who would ever sit in the top of a double-decker again after the carnage we witnessed on Jan. 11, when three were killed and -
