A legal cannabis store has been proposed for the bustling retail strip in the heart of Wellington West village.
One of the winners of the provincial pot-shop lottery has planned a store called Superette on the ground floor of a five-storey commercial building at 1306 Wellington St. W. It’s next door to Watson’s Pharmacy and across the street from the Ottawa Bagelshop and Deli.
It is the first proposed cannabis store in Eastern Ontario, where five lottery winners have applied for shop

Stop setting deadlines for LRT: Meehan
As Ottawa councillors prepare for a key meeting with the builders of the city’s $2.1-billion light-rail transit system next week, one councillor says setting deadlines for service to begin is counter-productive.
“I think it’s time to stop setting deadlines for the LRT to open,” Coun. Carol Anne Meehan tweeted Friday afternoon. “It disappoints people and shakes their confidence. The LRT will be ready when it’s ready to roll. Can’t wait.”

Rideau Canal reopens to skaters Saturday morning
These plunging temperatures have a silver lining.
The entire 7.8 km length of the Rideau Canal Skateway reopens Saturday morning at 8 a.m., just in time for the second weekend of Winterlude and the Ottawa Ice Dragon Boat Festival – the world’s largest.
The canal closed temporarily Feb. 4 to ensure mild temperatures wouldn’t erode the ice surface.

Renovation Transformation: Broken dishwasher sparks entire home reno
It started with a broken dishwasher.
It was an old appliance and the cost of fixing it equaled the price of a brand new one. Instead of an easy switch, the kitchen floor would have to be torn up in an effort to install a new dishwasher.
That triggered homeowners Ken Richardson and his partner to start thinking about a renovation. But the dishwasher problem soon became a kitchen problem, and when it didn’t make sense to refurbish just one area of the 1960s bungalow, it became an entire home -

Federal public service gets active with evolving workspaces
When Stéphanie Poliquin started her public service career in 1988 at what was then known as Public Works Canada, she said “everything was orange. And dusty, and thick.”
In an interview last fall, she recalled the days of filing cabinets almost too tall to reach, and furniture too heavy to move into different layouts when it came time for brainstorming between bureaucrats.
Now a vice-president with the Public Service Commission, Poliquin’s office is a far cry from th -
Adam: City of Ottawa's draft budget shows the mayor is indeed listening
One of the recurring criticisms of Jim Watson by many of those who went for Clive Doucet in the last municipal election was that the mayor had become so powerful he had stopped listening. Watson rejected the notion, of course, and went on to win the election in a landslide. But the 2019 draft budget shows that whether or not Watson was actually listening then, he is now.
The $3.6-billion draft budget, with its signature three-per-cent property tax increase, $85-million spending increase and reco -

Surviving member of 'Nepean cluster' says watching colleagues die changed his career in firefighting
Jim Andrews remembers the day his doctor phoned with the news.
He was in his mid-30s at the time, a career firefighter, married with two children. He had joined the former City of Nepean’s fire department when he was 23 years old.
Early in 2001, his wife noticed a mole on Armstrong’s chest that didn’t look right. His doctor tested it, but didn’t seem too concerned.
And then Andrews got the phone call.
As he listened, he wrote the word “malignant” on the blackb -
The other battle: Firefighters work to change a culture and protect themselves from cancer-causing toxins
When Norm Smith looked in the mirror and saw the rash on his face, he immediately contacted his doctor.
The veteran firefighter had been in the business long enough, and seen enough friends with cancer, to know better than taking any chances.
