Ontario to clear waiting lists, give money to parents for autism services
Three-year-old Mats Moffatt has spent half his life on a waiting list for autism services, a distinction he shares with 23,000 children around Ontario.
His family has no idea when that wait for publicly funded treatment might end. So, like many other families around the province, they are paying out-of-pocket for therapy that can cost between $60,000 and $80,000 a year.
“When your child gets diagnosed you are told over and over again that early intervention is the key and then you get stuc -

New Ottawa program aims to help people live well at the end of their lives
Although she cared for her sick husband for three years, Claudia Chowaniec admits she was in a “state of denial” that his death was imminent until the last few weeks of his life.
When he told her he wanted to die at home, she was wary. “I was afraid and exhausted. Time was short. I needed a crash course.”
Determined to grant his wish, she made arrangements for him to come home from the hospital. Once she did, everything changed, she said Wednesday at the launch of a progr -
'I deserve more,' says cadet awarded $310,000 in deadly '74 grenade blast
An Ottawa man has been awarded $310,000 for the life-altering damage caused when a grenade exploded in a deadly accident at a cadet camp in CFB Valcartier in 1974.
Randall Brooks, 59, received a cheque for $268,000 last week, the second instalment in a special program announced in 2017 to compensate about 150 teenagers who were inside barracks at a summer camp when the live grenade exploded during a demonstration on munitions.

Van Dusen: Trump’s real State of the Union message – I'm still here, suckers
The astonishing thing about Donald Trump’s State of the Union address Tuesday night was not that Donald Trump was delivering the State of the Union at all. It was that Donald Trump was delivering the State of the Union for the second time.
Because aside from all the other, smaller, more incremental metrics by which Trump’s disruptive presidency can be measured, it has, above all, been a triumph of normalization. From the moment the former game show host, real estate huckster and &mda -
Ottawa police budget proposes $18-million increase — with some creative accounting
Ottawa police are proposing an $18-million budget increase that would meet the three per cent cap on tax increases laid out for all city departments by city council — but not without some creative accounting.
The force would see a gross operating budget of $349.5 million, with 82 per cent of costs going towards $286 million in salaries. The budget would ask taxpayers to foot the bill — the average homeowner would pay $18 more to the police over last year. The total police cost f -

Glavin: China's harsh actions hold lessons in effective foreign policy
In the ongoing tumult arising from the December arrest of Huawei’s Meng Wanzhou, a kind of consensus has emerged in foreign-policy circles that unites both the greasy business-class wiseguys whose years of disastrous counsel left Canada so dangerously exposed to Beijing’s bullying in the first place, and the more steely eyed China observers whose warnings, for at least as many years, have gone unheeded.
The sum of the agreement goes something like this. With the possible excepti -

The last few times I’ve played tourist in New York, I’ve alternated meals at acclaimed and even Michelin-starred restaurants with visits to some of the city’s food halls. Sometimes it was hard to say which experiences delighted me more.
