Province sticking to April 1 opening for first 25 pot shops
Almost a month after Ontario held a pot-shop lottery, there is still no word on where the province’s first 25 stores will be located or when the public can weigh in.
However, Ontario still plans to have the privately run shops open by April 1, says a spokesperson for the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, which is responsible for licensing.
That will be a challenge, say several consultants and lawyers in the cannabis industry.
“We only have two months now,” says Mark Asf -
'A tragic accident': Ottawa truck driver found not guilty in 2016 death of cyclist
Not every deadly crash is a crime, and the one that claimed the life of cyclist Nusrat Jahan in 2016 has been ruled a tragic accident.
On Tuesday, Ontario Court Justice David Berg acquitted Steven Conley, the driver of a dump truck who struck and killed Jahan at the busy intersection of Laurier Avenue and Lyon Street during the morning rush hour on Sept. 1, 2016.
Conley was negotiating a right turn at the intersection, and while he didn’t signal, he couldn’t see the young c -
Slow rise in Ottawa house prices despite collapse in inventory
When available residential listings fall 20 per cent year over year — as they did last month in Ottawa — you would expect a fairly significant rise in the price of properties sold. Instead, average prices edged up just 1.5 per cent to $432,800 compared with a year earlier, according to multiple-listing data published Tuesday by the Ottawa Real Estate Board.
The pattern is even more dramatic when viewed over a two-year perspective. The number of January listings — consisti -

Q & A: What should a city budget look like when viewed through a 'gender lens'?
Bay Coun. Theresa Kavanagh says there are areas across city operations that call for greater attention to gender equity, from affordable housing to snow clearing, to how much influence women have in municipal government.
“It’s such a large issue. I admit, I’ve never had a chance to have expertise in it except as a woman who’s just tried to get along and make my way through life. I’ve got that layperson outlook and I think it’s actually a benefit,” Kavana -

Denley: Special social-housing tax levy won't solve Ottawa's problems
When politicians tell me something will only cost as much as a cup of coffee, I get a little wary, especially when they are asking for $40 million. That’s part of the pitch from Ottawa councillors Mathieu Fleury and Catherine McKenney, who want the city to boost its social housing spending by $10 million a year for four years.
Achieving that would cost the average home owner the equivalent of a single cup of coffee a month, the councillors say, but they wouldn’t be collecting our loo -

Cohen: A compelling story could take Kamala Harris to the White House
LOS ANGELES – For the most populous state in America, you would think California would produce presidents as prolifically as Ohio and Virginia. It hasn’t.
Richard Nixon was the only president born here. Ronald Reagan moved here from Illinois, Herbert Hoover from Iowa.
All were conservatives, reflecting a state that was reliably red for much of the last century. But California is now decisively and defiantly blue. Democrats hold 46 of the 53 congressional seats, super-majorities in bo -
"I want that release to just go play" — The Joey Calderazzo Interview
Last week, when I spoke for the first time with Joey Calderazzo, the world-class American jazz pianist let everything hang out. Which, if you know his unfettered, always genuine, go-for-it playing, shouldn’t be a surprise.

Three big rigs collide on Highway 401 in South Glengarry
Three truckers were taken to the hospital with injuries early Tuesday after one sparked a chain-reaction crash on Highway 401 in South Glengarry Township.
The westbound stretch of the highway between county roads 23 and 34 was closed Tuesday morning as police investigated.
Their preliminary investigation suggests that “for reasons under investigation,” a westbound tractor-trailer was rear-ended by a second truck at 12:21 a.m. The second truck was then rear-ended by a third.

Morning commute is wet and wild
It’s a wet one Tuesday whether you walk, bus or drive, folks.
School buses in Ottawa and most of the region are cancelled.
OC Transpo is predicting delays on the majority of routes. Traffic snarls range from the deep puddle on Bank Street under Highway 417 to a broken water main that’s closed Bronson Avenue in the Glebe and flooded Queen Elizabeth Drive.
Ottawa police issued a rare “hydroplaning” alert.
Road conditions are slick this morning with the possibility of hydrop -

Rainford: Lessons from the false alarm over Carleton U attacker
Last week, somewhere deep in the labyrinth of the Carleton University security system, someone hit the wrong key at the wrong time. We all do this. But more often than not, it’s just that we forget to include a promised attachment. A bit embarrassing, sure, but hardly life threatening.
On Jan. 28, however, that mistaken keystroke sent out a notice warning of an “ACTIVE ATTACKER ON THE CARLETON UNIVERSITY CAMPUS” to students, staff and faculty. Those responsible tried their best -

Today's letters: We need integrated care to address mental health issues
We need integrated care for mental health
Re: Ottawa Hospital wants rapid-access mental health clinic among inquest recommendations, Jan. 29.
A hospital admission shouldn’t just address an immediate health risk. It should deliver needed treatment. After all, more than 90 per cent of people who die by suicide have a mental disorder. The article fails to point out that while mental health care is often best delivered in communities, it is less likely to be covered by OHIP. Our provincia -

'Misty' morning will lead to big slide, with temps swooping to -15 C tonight
Were you one of the many who were complaining about chilly weather?
Maybe you’re reconsidering.
The official weather condition on Environment Canada’s site Tuesday was “mist,” which is apparently their charming way of saying soaking wet.
It takes a special city to have frozen ice blocks for sidewalks while the streets are literal rivers of melted snow and ice. #ottweather

Sens paw-thetic — 10 players help raise funds for dog rescue charity
Though the Ottawa Senators have gone to the dogs many times this season, Monday was the first time they seemed happy about it.
About 10 members of the NHL team and their spouses were the star attractions at a $350-a-ticket night to raise money for Freedom Dog Rescue, a local charity that fostered and adopted out 240 dogs in 2018.
Dinner guests were greeted with frisky puppies as they entered Whalesbone on Elgin Street, some wearing Sens gear, all looking for new homes.
Hosts for the evening were -
Councillors pitch one-per-cent tax levy to increase affordable housing
Two city councillors behind a one-per-cent homelessness tax levy to jump-start construction of affordable housing are hoping the idea will be in the city’s draft budget on Wednesday.
Somerset Coun. Catherine McKenney and Rideau-Vanier Coun. Mathieu Fleury say the proposed levy, beginning this year and continuing for the next four years of council, would yield $40 million for a “serious strategic investment” to build affordable housing. The levy would cost taxpayers about $23 a -
