Snow days, school buses, and our growing anxiety about winter
We’ve all heard the complaints: The school buses have been cancelled again. It is happening more and more, people will tell you, making families scramble and adding to the misery of winter.
So we looked up the numbers — and busted an urban myth.
Snow days for school buses fluctuate from year to year, but there is no upward trend.
Underneath this belief, however, there’s a different trend: The psychology of weather, of the human experience with winter, is changing. And not for t -

Job flexibility, maternity benefits and workplace culture key to attracting and retaining talent, experts say
Modern employees are demanding more of their employers, from flexible work arrangements and tailored hours to increased maternity and paternity benefits.
Simply put, the longtime status quo just isn’t cutting it anymore. Younger generations of workers just don’t want to spend 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., five days a week, in a staid, beige office cubicle.
“We hear from clients quite often about how often their employees are willing to sacrifice on salary versus flexibility or vacation, fl -

'We've all been wounded in some way': Chamberfest presents world debut of Scar Tissue
Before composer Jeffrey Ryan committed a single note of his new and ambitious piece, Scar Tissue, to manuscript paper, he needed firm answers to a few preliminary but key questions.
Who would perform his music? Who would write words for it and what would they be? What science-based theme would gird it? “All that thought and preparation sets me up for the actual composition,” Ryan says.
Once those aspects of the big picture snapped into focus, Ryan was able to sit down at his draughti -

Bayshore Shopping Centre reopens Wednesday morning as usual after closing early on Tuesday evening due to a broken water main.
The mall reported Wednesday morning that it would reopen at 9 a.m.
“Extreme cold” caused the main to break inside the shopping centre, staff reported.
Water had to be shut off to the building.
The water main has been repaired and Bayshore will be back to our regular hours, as of 9AM today. pic.twitter.com/j4p5B5mvxq

Today's letters: Should the city help build an NHL arena?
Clear the snow before we ante up on arena
Re: Does Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk have a case of Edmonton envy? Jan. 24.
This Jan. 24 column suggested Ottawa emulate Edmonton and handing over $226 million to the Ottawa Senators for a new arena. Clever to place it between the story about police wanting a 5.1 per cent budget increase and another explaining the city doesn’t have a budget to handle an “early” snowfall.
Let’s wait until we have safe, snow-free streets bef -

Sen. Patrick Brazeau: How family – and a stranger’s kindness – made life worth living
They say everybody gets a second chance in life.
I must be one of the lucky ones, because I got three.
Three years ago, I was lying on a hospital bed, unconscious, intubated and recovering from serious injuries from a second suicide attempt. It was a time in my life when I had given up on everything and everyone around me.
Today, I am preparing to once again return to work at the Senate. My newborn son, River, brings a smile to my face every day. And I’m building a new life with my soon-to -
'Anger, rage, sadness': Paraplegic drunk driver who maimed Ottawa motorcyclist sentenced to prison
Ottawa’s Stephanie Albert wanted to meet the eyes of the drunk driver who ruined her life as he was wheeled from a Perth courtroom to serve a 3 1/2-year prison term.
“I wanted to be the last thing he saw in the courtroom before he went to jail, because I wanted him to think about me while he’s in there,” the 30-year-old Albert said Tuesday.
“I didn’t say anything to him; I just looked at him. I didn’t let him see me cry until the door closed behind him: -

After almost 250 days, Ottawa man accused in two killings wants out of solitary: 'This is my cry for help'
The last time they let Mohamad Barkhadle out of jail, he went on to be accused of even worse crimes against women — including the 2017 slaying of a single mom. Her body wasn’t discovered for 10 days and her two-year-old boy had to fend for himself in their fifth-floor public housing unit in Mechanicsville.
Once back in jail after his arrest, Barkhadle was later charged with another count of first-degree murder, this time in the April 2018 jailhouse beating of inmate Marco Michaud, 36 -

Trudeau asked about Scott Brison’s emails in the Mark Norman case
By David Pugliese and Brian Platt
A lawyer for former Liberal cabinet minister Scott Brison showed up in an Ottawa court Tuesday with his client’s emails that had been requested in the case of Vice Admiral Mark Norman.
Norman’s lawyers are trying to gather documents they need to defend the navy officer on one count of breach of trust.
Norman, who was the second-highest officer in the military, is accused of leaking cabinet secrets to help ensure the government moved forward with a $7
