Independent investigators needed in crash, expert says
A transportation engineering expert who studied the Humboldt Broncos bus crash last April and Ottawa’s 2013 bus-train crash says the city should immediately call in independent investigators to examine Friday’s deadly double-decker bus crash at Westboro Station.
“There needs to be an independent safety investigation,” Ahmed Shalaby, professor and municipal infrastructure chair with the department of civil engineering at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, said Saturda -

Why OC Transpo added double-decker buses to its fleet
The time seemed right for the City of Ottawa in spring 2007 to take a chance on a new bus finally available for the North American transit market.
City higher-ups, who are no longer with the corporation today, told council back then that the double-decker buses could offer a better transit experience for customers and could even help increase OC Transpo’s ridership.
This was the start of Transpo’s buy-in to double-decker buses.
There were plenty of good reasons why the city thought t -
No reason not to trust transit system after deadly crash, Ottawa Centre MPP says
Ottawa Centre MPP Joel Harden, whose riding includes Westboro station, said he was saddened and shocked by the collision. “It’s a pretty sad day.”
However, people should not be afraid of riding the city’s buses, he said in an interview Saturday.
Harden often takes double-decker buses with his two young children. The most popular seats are usually in the front, he said.
Harden said he may take a ride with the kids Saturday just to make the point that he still trusts the bu -

Updated Ottawa bus crash: Photos and video
It should have been a normal commute home at the end of a long work week for the passengers on OC Transpo’s “Connexion” Route 269, bound for Kanata’s Bridlewood neighbourhood from downtown.
But as the packed, double-decker bus roared through Westboro Station at 3:50 p.m., something went suddenly, horrifyingly wrong. The driver lost control, sending the bus hurtling over the curb and into the shelter, impaling itself on the shelter’s overhanging steel and glass roof, -

Homeless contract raises questions
Re: Auditor general investigating city contract to house homeless families, councillor says, Jan. 7.
There seem to have been some special deals made with the owner of the Ottawa Inn for sheltering the homeless; perhaps someone at city hall should do some searches to find the best rates available. A $100 rate paid by the City of Ottawa seems rather pricey given the place is listed as a two-star with no amenities.

Risk of frostbite today but at least that comes with a much needed dose of sunshine
It’s another cold day in the nation’s capital.

The wind chill will make it feel more like -15 this afternoon.
Tonight the temperature will drop sharply, dipping down to -24 C. The wind chill, ever-present, will obviously make that feel colder, probably reaching -29.
