Look up, Ottawa: Lunar eclipse coming Jan. 20, and the next one isn't until 2022
There’s a total eclipse of the moon coming the night of Jan. 20-21, easily visible from Eastern Ontario if the weather is clear.
It will be the last eclipse visible from Ottawa until 2022. To have the best view of this one, you probably want to stay up until midnight.
Lunar eclipses aren’t as rare as solar eclipses and they are a lot easier to watch because you don’t need safety equipment. You are looking at the moon, not at the sun.

What happens when Tobi Nussbaum vacates his seat in Rideau-Rockcliffe?
With Coun. Tobi Nussbaum leaving Rideau-Rockcliffe Ward for the National Capital Commission, remaining councillors will soon choose how they want to replace him.
It all has to start with a written resignation from Nussbaum himself, submitted to the city clerk.
“At this point in time, no such notice has been provided and, therefore, no decisions have been formally taken,” the city’s media office said in an email Monday.
Eventually, council declares the seat vacant. At that point -

Firefighters save home after residents report chimney fire
A “fast and aggressive” attack managed to save much of a Carlsbad Springs area home Monday morning, but damage was extensive after the residents discovered that their chimney was on fire.
They called 911 to 5361 Thunder Road at 10:26 a.m. As firefighters arrived from Station 32 on Leitrim Road, they discovered that flames had extended into the second story, but they managed to save a “great deal” of the structure. The fire was out at 11:51 a.m.

Murderer in downtown nightclub death has conviction downgraded by appeal court
A killer who fatally stabbed 24-year-old Navid Niran after run-ins with him and his friends at a downtown nightclub in 2012 was “unreasonably” convicted of first-degree murder by a jury, Ontario’s Court of Appeal has ruled.
In a decision released Friday, the court ruled that while Ahmed Hafizi murdered Niran, there was no irrefutable evidence that the stabbing was planned or deliberate. The appeal court has set aside the conviction and replaced it with one for second-degree mur -

Not fade away: Older Canadians are having more sex than ever
When Don and Karen met 20 years ago in their mid-40s, they never thought they would still be having sex into their 60s.
“Back then, 60 was ancient,” says Karen, now 66.
“I didn’t think I would be alive,” says Don, 67.
Twenty years later, though, the couple, who asked their that real names not be used, have embarked on a quest to keep their sexual relationship going as long as they can.

Adam: Forget mediation and pull the plug on RendezVous LeBreton now
Memo to the National Capital Commission: Close the book on RendezVous LeBreton. Cut Eugene Melnyk and John Ruddy loose and start again.
The city was taken by surprise when news broke Friday that the feuding RendezVous LeBreton partners were going to mediation in their dispute over the $4-billion project. Partners who only weeks ago were lobbing hand grenades at each other suddenly want to sing Kumbaya. And former Ontario judge Warren Winkler is to mediate. Really?

Glavin: 2018 was horrible for human rights, and 2019 doesn't look good
The brave young activists of Hong Kong’s democracy movement, hounded in the courts, ruthlessly bullied but not yet broken in spirit, ushered in the new year last week in diminished ranks. Perhaps 5,000 demonstrators turned up at Civic Square, as the Beijing-beholden legislative council’s forecourt has come to be called. It was roughly half the turnout of the New Year’s Day protest a year ago.
There were scuffles with security guards. The Hong Kong administration condemned the p -

On the couch of his Orléans home between his wife of 15 years, Robin Meyers, and Bernese mountain dog, Brooklyn, Keith Barrett is the picture of a life well lived.
At 59, he works full time at the company he co-founded more than 20 years ago to support people with disabilities, delights in a growing blended family of six sons and five grandchildren and is looking forward to some Florida sunshine.
But he’s also a new voice of -

Auditor general investigating city contract to house homeless families, councillor says

I first caught the political bug when I was only 12. The year was 1958 -

This is the last in a series on Ottawa’s affordable housing challenges:
Canadian governments at all levels have bungled the issue of housing affordability. Their policies drive up the cost of housing and make it difficult to accommodate new immigrants and people forming their own families. Instead of expanding supply, government policies artificially restrict demand. Most of their efforts focus on people with low incomes, but even there they are treading water, spending billions of dollars -
