Mini-thaw prompts temporary closure of full Rideau Canal Skateway
OK, maybe the National Capital Commission jumped the gun a little bit on Dec. 30, when it opened the Rideau Canal Skateway for its 49th season.
One week later, the agency announced it would close the 2.7-kilometre section between Pretoria Bridge (Hawthorne Avenue) and the Bank Street Bridge at 11 p.m. Saturday because of this weekend’s mini-thaw.
The NCC said the mild weather had “eroded the quality of the ice surface and created hazardous conditions for skaters and the public.& -
Shell announces $16M upgrade to Brockville motor oil plant
Shell Canada is investing $16 million to expand its Brockville motor oil plant in 2019.
Plant manager Kelly McKinnon said the company would use the money to install the new equipment to increase production and efficiency.
“With the volume growth, we hope to add additional shifts to handle the production. It’s healthy for us and the community,” McKinnon told Leeds & Grenville officials.

Heartless theft of safety railing rankles store owner
Some people will steal anything that’s not bolted down.
Heartless thieves went further in Brockville this week, taking off with the massive, bolted down safety railing at a downtown store.
The railing was to help the Golden Soles shoe store’s many senior and disabled customers who needed the support to enter the speciality shop. It was solid enough to support customers who weighed up to 400 pounds. It was an L-shaped chunk of hardwood, about eight inches thick, four feet long and sol -

A 36-year-old Cantley man will spend the weekend in jail after police arrested him Friday night in connection with a knifepoint robbery at a service station on New Year’s Day.
Investigators were able to identify a suspect thanks to a description of the man provided by a store employee.

Get ready for freezing drizzle, snow and a massive temperature drop
So, it’s going to be one of those weekends.
A little bit of all of the worst winter weather stuff.
It all begins with a chance of freezing drizzle and fog on Saturday morning.
That system should clear up by midday and the afternoon, although probably fairly messy, should be decent with a high of 3 C.
A section of the Rideau Canal has been closed to skaters due to “adverse weather conditions.”
Snow should begin to fall by the evening and continue throughout the night. Environmen -

Shaver: Ford was right to think twice about a French university
Was Premier Doug Ford wrong to cancel a possible exclusively French university in Toronto?
Former Premier Kathleen Wynne had announced a plan to establish this university in central and southwestern Ontario with a “start-up cost” of $83.5 million. This would be funded over 10 years, with the federal government contributing half.
The reaction to Ford’s decision included at least 40 demonstrations across the province. MPP Amanda Simard quit his caucus – the only francophone -

Ellis: An ode to Bella's Bistro – warmth and sumptuous cuisine won't be forgotten
One of the gifts I received for Christmas this year was Volume 2 of the book Lost Ottawa by David McGee. Words on the cover of the book describe it as “the unwritten history of the Nation’s Capital and a loving tribute to the power and beauty of everyday life.” In my opinion, the story of you, Bella, your family and Bella’s Bistro deserve star billing in the history of our city.

Denley: A roof over our heads – the sorry state of social housing
This is the fourth in a series on Ottawa’s affordable housing challenge:
All levels of government are working together to make housing dramatically more unaffordable for middle-income people. That’s the part they don’t want you to think about. But how are they doing when it comes to providing housing for the poor, the real focus of their spending and attention?
The federal government has promised $40 billion over 10 years for housing, although nearly three-quarters of that was -

Ottawa man, 62, faces child porn charges after mission to Nepal orphanage
An Ottawa man is facing child pornography charges after being stopped by the Canada Border Services Agency as he returned to this country following a volunteer mission to an orphanage in Nepal.
At the time the 62-year-old was stopped in Ottawa in mid-December, officers found evidence of suspected child pornography and conversations in which he requested to have sexual relations with children under the age of 16, the Ottawa police alleged in a news release Friday.

The man behind the LeBreton Flats mediation: Who is Warren Winkler?
Warren Winkler has been tasked with what many across the city may have dismissed as a lost cause — mediating the issues between RendezVous LeBreton’s major players, whose behind-the-scenes disputes have been publicly laid bare in a series of legal filings.
Just who is Winkler, and what hope does he have in helping Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk, Trinity Development founder John Ruddy and GBA president Graham Bird resolve their differences before the National Capital Commission&r -

Egan: Divorce counselling or poker game? How LeBreton plays.
And so the grey patient is offered a Hail Mary at bedside, one last face-slap to redden the cheeks and escape the boneyard.
In the soap opera that is LeBreton Flats, maybe it will work: a final-hour attempt at high-level, expert mediation between parties that first sparred, then dug into trenches and lobbed explosive lawsuits, with an NHL dream in peril and a $4-billion plan sliding off the table.

"Adverse weather" closes 1-km section of Rideau Canal Skateway
After opening it to skaters for less than 24 hours, the National Capital Commission said a one-kilometre stretch of the Rideau Canal Skateway between Bank Street and Bronson Avenue was to close at midnight Friday because of “adverse weather conditions.”
That section officially opened Friday morning, but forecast conditions meant the NCC was unable to guarantee a “safe ice surface” and planned to close it before Saturday morning.
