And they're off! Skateway to open bright and early Sunday
Get your blades sharpened Ottawa.

Options for your Christmas tree beyond kicking it to the curb.
The NCC uses hundreds of unsold Christmas trees as windbreaks and borders on the Rideau Canal. Now the skateway crew is asking Ottawa residents to consider recycling their Christmas trees instead of bringing them to the curb.
In a tweet, the NCC asked residents to recycle their trees by bringing them to a dropoff location on Colonel By Drive, just west of the Bronson Avenue Bridge. Most of the conifers used on the skateway are unsold trees from tree merchants — about 1,500 of them eve -

Another day, another busted water main in Gatineau
St. Joseph Boulevard was shut down for several hours Saturday morning in both directions between Brodeur and Dumas streets after a water main froze and burst before dawn.
It’s a short detour, both in physical length and duration (the street reopened by about 11:30 a.m.), but it represents yet another infrastructure headache for the city.

Armchair Mayors' reports: What happened to our ideas for Ottawa this year
In advance of the 2018 municipal election, we asked several local people to don the mantle of “armchair mayor” and offer one idea each to make Ottawa a better city. What happened to their suggestions? As the year ends, here’s a follow-up report from some of our writers:

Weather: Back to below-freezing temperatures, and the return of wind chill
The weather pendulum that is the winter of 2018-2019 has swung back, with temperatures dipping below zero (again).
You’ll notice gusting winds, up to 50 km/hour, at least for the first part of the day, as you crunch around Ottawa’s streets and sidewalks.
Environment Canada is predicting periods of rain or drizzle ending early Saturday morning, then mainly cloudy with 60 per cent chance of flurries.
It should clear Saturday afternoon, with temperatures falling to -10 C in the af -
Who was the 'Santa Claus' forger, captured in Ottawa after 35 years?
Lucius Parmelee was sitting in the train station in Vars, just outside Ottawa, waiting for the next train to Montreal, when the stationmaster’s telephone rang.
It was unseasonably cold for the first day of May — just above freezing — and raining. But Parmelee, who had celebrated his 58th birthday only four days earlier, had reason to feel warm: he was carrying a bulging brown leather briefcase containing $17,400 in cash, a king’s ransom back in 1947, the equivalent today -
Samulack: Liberals merely paying lip service to grieving parents
This holiday season, there were many parents across Canada who did not get to experience “Baby’s First Christmas.” The Pregnancy and Infant Loss Network has reported that in Ontario alone, more than 37,000 families are impacted by pregnancy and infant loss annually. This month, an acquaintance (who we will call Jane) lost her 10-month-old son, Miles. Miles was born prematurely and though he had a rough start to life, it looked as though he would make it. Today's letters: The four seasons, and how we measure them
The winter of our discontent
Re: Are we counting seasons wrong? There are lots of reasons not to have winter begin this late in December, Dec. 21.
I was delighted to read Tom Spears’s article asking: Are we counting the seasons wrong? To which my response is yes, yes, yes!
It is obvious that winter in Ottawa starts well before the solstice date, which merely marks the shortest day of the year. By any objective measure (snow, snow tires, freezing temperatures), winter has alr -
