LeBreton Flats becomes Tobi Nussbaum's problem
LeBreton Flats, and all the baggage weighing down the redevelopment project, is now Tobi Nussbaum’s problem.
The Ottawa city councillor, who will take over as CEO of the National Capital Commission on Feb. 4, says the historic transformation of the decrepit federal land will be at the top of the briefing pile as he moves offices four blocks up Elgin Street.
“Clearly we’re at a point now where decisions have to be made about the future of that site. It’s going to be very, -

Fire up your binoculars: The 100th Ottawa Christmas Bird Count takes place this Sunday
Ottawa reaches a milestone this Sunday, and people will celebrate by heading out on foot before dawn into the cold and snow to listen for owls.
They are unlikely to hear any. Owls are rare in the city, but the Christmas Bird Count rules say you spend all day looking for whatever birds are around, and that includes the owls.
After sunrise, you tromp around until late afternoon recording all the birds you see — how many species and how many individuals of each. Along the way, there’s a -
Teen's apparent kidnapping a hoax, police allege
A teen reported missing after his car was found abandoned still running on the Airport Parkway is now charged with mischief after police concluded it was “a hoax set up as a kidnapping.”
Kilal Taha, 18, is to appear in court Jan. 11 charged with mischief, police said Friday, saying only that help from the public aided major crime investigators in uncovering the ruse. He is the only person charged.
On Nov. 26, Taha’s worried family, who are Syrian refugees, according to police s -
Kanata Golf and Country Club could be bulldozed to make way for housing
Another golf course that weaves through a suburban Ottawa community may be bulldozed to make way for a major infill residential development.
ClubLink confirmed Friday that it’s partnering with Minto Communities and Richcraft Homes to redevelop the Kanata Golf and Country Club with new homes. The trio is planning a community consultation beginning in early 2019.
The golf course’s operating costs are rising and fewer golfers are teeing off during the season, ClubLink says, suggesting t -
Funding cut by Tories a blow to midwifery in Ontario, health experts say
Cutting funds to the College of Midwives of Ontario delivers a blow to a profession already under strain and could further limit access to midwifery care in Ontario, says those who study the profession.
The College of Midwives revealed this week that the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has stopped providing it with funding. The college says it was told the decision is retroactive to April, which means the organization will not receive the money it had expected for the current fiscal year. -

Suicide or desperate cry for help? Jury begins deliberations in Cleve Geddes inquest
Did Cleve Geddes die by suicide or was his death an accidental hanging, a desperate effort by the 29-year-old paranoid schizophrenic to get staff at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre to send him to hospital?
That question is one of many the five-person coroner’s jury must answer as they began deliberations Friday on evidence given over eight days of grueling testimony about Geddes’ death in February 2017.
In addition to the mandatory “Five Ws” — who, where, when, -
That time George H.W. Bush wrote about fishing in Canada
The following essay was written in 1997 by former U.S. president George H.W. Bush for the Deh Cho Drum paper in Fort Simpson, N.W.T.
Originally published Aug. 31, 1997
Fort Simpson, N.W.T. — I love fishing the Tree River.
Way above the treeline, the fast-flowing Tree River pours its rushing green-grey waters into the Arctic Ocean, about a mile or two from where I fished for char.
As the waters race over the boulders and rocks, you can catch an occasional glimpse of the maje -

Why Canada is not as safe for kids as you might think it is, and what a community near Ottawa is doing about it
The red street sign reads Testa’n: Stop, in Mohawk. The Grade 6 students gather around and take pictures of the sign and the steady traffic passing by.
“What do you see here?” asks Rose-Alma McDonald, an Akwesasne-based project leader on a community tour with the students.
“Cars,” “a road,” “the school,” they chime in.
“What would make it safer?” they are asked.
A crosswalk, one girl says, looking down at the dark, wet pavement. A -

Ottawa police officers won’t be charged after a man discovered to have a broken arm after his release on a public intoxication charge offered complaints about his treatment riddled with “inconsistencies and inaccuracies,” the province’s Special Investigations Unit reported Friday.

New Presto app will (eventually) let customers pay from their smartphones
Presto card users, rejoice.
Metrolinx, the Crown agency that oversees the Presto system, has just released a new beta version of an app that will eventually allow customers to avoid the line by loading their cards directly from their smartphones.
Presto customers everywhere have fallen victim to the huge lineups that form in front of OC Transpo service centres. This new app seems to provide a potential solution to the inconvenience, allowing users the chance to load their passes from the luxury -
