Canada’s senators took possession of their new chamber Thursday, a refurbished train station with ties to the First World War, constitutional talks and the King of Rock and Roll.
It took six years and $219 million to convert the building, which will be home to the Senate for at least a decade while Centre Block is gutted and refurbished.

Cluster of local bomb threats demanding Bitcoin ransom all false alarms, police say
A wave of more than 10 emailed bomb threats in Ottawa and Gatineau Thursday afternoon have all turned out to be false alarms, Ottawa police say.
In each case, the person making the alarm demanded a ransom in Bitcoin, police reported. Some of the threats were to businesses and some were to individuals.
Police are asking anyone who receives such a threat not to respond to the ransom demand, but to call police instead at (613) 236-1222 extension 7300, or report the incident online.

Investigators are examining an electrical closet as the potential source of the fire Wednesday that displaced more than 200 residents.
Damage is pegged at $1.5 million in the fire at 251 Donald St., near the Vanier Parkway, which started on the north side of the building’s second floor, Ottawa Fire Services spokeswoman Danielle Cardinal said Thursday. The first floor to the fourth floor were most damaged by fire and smoke.

A tow truck nabbed doing nearly triple the speed limit Thursday morning wound up being towed itself to car jail while the driver earned a licence suspension and hefty ticket.
Const. Phil Kane reported that a patrol officer caught the tow truck racing to a collision at 148 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. It was stopped on Walkley Road approaching Riverside Drive.

Antiques: Tranquil night painting by Schofield is a treasure
Q: This beautiful, peaceful scene is a painting by John William Schofield (1865-1944). It belonged to my British grandmother, who received it from the Hart Collection in the 1950s.
It was brought to Canada from England in 1982. The painting measures 51 x 61 cm (20 x 24 inches) and is dated 1931. The framing label reads ‘Wm Whiteley Ltd. Fine Art Dept. Queens Road, W2.’

Kingston man sentenced to 10 years for sex assaults on preteen girls
A 38-year-old Kingston man whose predatory acts on three preteen girls had a “devastating impact on the children and their families,” according to a trial judge who sentenced the man to the equivalent of 10 years behind bars.

One person in custody after late-night stabbing Wednesday
One man has been arrested after a man suffered non-life-threatening wounds in a stabbing near Russell Road in the east end Wednesday night.
Police were called to the scene near the intersection of Russell Road and Southvale Crescent at around 10 p.m.
They found the victim on a footpath. He was taken to hospital.
Further investigation led to the arrest of of the second man.
Police would not say whether the victim and the suspect know each other.

Protesters rally at Canada Post before AGM at headquarters
About 100 protesters rallied at Canada Post headquarters Wednesday to send a message to those attending the Crown corporation’s annual general meeting being held inside.
The demonstrators came from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, including well-known labour leader Jean-Claude Parrot, and a handful of other labour organizations showing solidarity over an ongoing labour dispute that has led to rotating strikes across Canada.
