How might the drugs we take affect our children or grandchildren?
Amid all the thousands of trials that examine whether drugs are safe for us to use, Vance Trudeau asks who is looking out for our children and grandchildren.
We are the most highly medicated generation in history. Yet Trudeau, who studies hormones and the brain at the University of Ottawa, says we know little about what effects the drugs taken today may cause decades from now, to future generations.
“These are major, major, important questions,” he said. “In the last 10 years, -
Prozac passes on altered behaviour to next three generations in fish, researchers find
Fish exposed to the antidepressant drug Prozac pass on altered behaviour to the next three generations, raising questions about what might happen to human children whose mothers take the drug.
At the University of Ottawa, researchers Vance Trudeau and Marilyn Vera-Chang exposed fish eggs and newly-hatched fish to Prozac levels typical of what would cross the human placenta and reach an embryo.
Trudeau and others had already studied side-effects of these drugs in fish for years, concentrating on -

You can look up today and see an astronaut
Look up after sunset Monday and if the sky stays clear you’ll get an unusually good chance to see a spaceship fly over with a Canadian on board.
David Saint-Jacques joined the International Space Station crew this month, and the station flies over Ottawa beginning around 5:41 p.m.
The station can often be seen when it flies over a little after sunset or before sunrise. This is when the sky seems dark to us, but there is still sunlight 400 kilometres above us and it lights up the gleaming w -

Sharpe: Four minutes to tell school board about Ottawa's black history
Anyone who has attended meetings at the Ottawa Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) office on 133 Greenbank Road will attest to the grandness of the council chamber room, the massive artworks reflecting different aspects of education, and the wall map outlining the expansive territorial reach of the board.

Boswell: Trudeau's tale of his family link in Singapore shouldn't have skirted the slavery bit
Last month, when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took some time during an official visit to Asia to explore a surprising Singaporean link to his family’s history, there was no discussion of his distant ancestor’s role in permitting slave trading in the new British colony — and igniting the fury of his abolitionist boss.
