Dwyer: Canada's new corporate ombudsperson needs real power
Canada has a clear choice: Be a world leader or a laggard when it comes to human rights and the mining industry.
Canadian mining companies operating overseas have been associated with widespread and egregious human rights abuses including murder and rape. The current system relies on voluntary industry initiatives to respect human rights. It is clearly not working.
But this could soon change. Canada is poised to have an Ombudsperson for Responsible Enterprise, with an appointment expected by the -

Life-sized baby Jesus stolen from Renfrew's Christmas creche
For two decades, members of the Put Christ Back Into Christmas committee have been erecting a Nativity scene in Renfrew.
Now they’re appealing for whoever stole the life-size baby Jesus to put the Saviour back in his cradle in the town’s Low Square.
A volunteer noticed Jesus was missing Sunday as he was setting up for the annual lighting of the Nativity for a ceremony marking the first Sunday of Advent, said MC Diana Wakely. It’s been reported to the OPP.

Ottawa doctor helps emergency room physicians make tough decisions
A new study shows an assessment tool designed by an Ottawa doctor can help emergency-room physicians make critical decisions about patients who come to hospital with breathing difficulties.
ER doctors are regularly confronted by patients who have trouble breathing because of chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), a serious lung disease often associated with smoking. A simple cold or the flu can aggravate the condition and leave patients struggling for air.

Canada Post workers got a show of support Monday morning in Ottawa from an unusual source: communists.
About a dozen protesters were at a mail-processing plant near Terminal Avenue, with a barrel that had a fire lit inside and a red banner calling on workers to unite and strike down capitalism, colonialism and imperialism.
The protest was organized by the Revolutionary Communist Party Ottawa branch and the International Workers of the World, said protest spokesperson Alex Miller.

Wellar: We need free, easy access to public records
The 2018 municipal election campaign in Ontario was marked by numerous media reports that faulted municipal governments for failing to provide citizens with free, easy and timely access to municipal records. Examples of records to which access was denied included: budget documents, project contracts, police service reports, and development proposals.
Clearly, freedom of information legislation does not work on behalf of citizens. Its failings include the following: Access to records is limited t -

City bureaucrats will probably high-five each other in their offices Wednesday afternoon if council approves a measure in the governance report that could reduce staff workload.
Council members are allowed to submit “formal” inquires to staff if they want information about how the municipal government is functioning. Sometimes they’re asking for explanations about how a particular policy or program is being implemented. Other times they want statistics.
