Milnes: George H.W. Bush – a friendship born of fishing
With the loss of George H.W. Bush, the 41st president of the United States, at age 94, so many will – rightly – be commenting on the historical and political legacy of this giant of 20th-century American and world politics.
Canadians in particular should take pause and recall the death of a very special friend of our nation. Not since Franklin Roosevelt in the 1930s and 1940s have citizens of our country see an American president devote such much time and positive attention to the na -

Q is for quarry: Forgotten, overgrown quarry provided the building blocks of Ottawa
The return journey was only slightly more than 30 kilometres, but the roads were terrible and the loads heavy, and each team of horses could only manage one trip a day.
When the Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings underwent reconstruction following the Great Fire of 1916, the demand for Nepean sandstone — the same stone used in its original construction — was overwhelming. Quarryman Archie Campbell recalled, “Our first order came from Peter Lyall Construction Company for 1 -

Today's letters: Harsh facts about LeBreton Flats
Just the facts on the Flats, please
Re: LeBreton Flats plan in jeopardy after ‘unresolved issues’ between Melnyk and Ruddy, Nov. 23.
In the never-ending saga of LeBreton Flats and the Ottawa Senators, people are ignoring several realities.
First, LeBreton Flats is not a “downtown” area; few if any people from the downtown would ever walk to the area, and its real accessibility lies in the presence of two LRT stations.
Second, the current facility in Kanata is one of the b -
Editorial: Ontario francophones deserve better
There’s every reason to think Doug Ford now realizes the mistake he made in deciding to reduce some key Ontario language services. Just days after announcing that the French-language services commissioner would be downgraded, and that there would be no new French-language university, the premier retracted parts of the plan.
But the damage is done, the half-retreat unsatisfying. Many Ontario francophones and their supporters are upset, and Progressive Conservative MPP Amanda Simard, r -
Trop peu, trop tard. Le mal est fait et les concessions sont insuffisantes. Un grand no -

Cardiac arrest survivor installs external defibrillator outside his house
Chris Troughton believes that defibrillators save lives. They’ve saved his four times.
Troughton was thinking about getting an automated external defibrillator (AED) for his own home, but then he met Action First Aid’s Roger Hennig, who converted Troughton to the idea that an AED could be shared with an entire neighbourhood by placing it in a weatherproof cabinet in front of his house.
“It makes sense because it’s available to more people. We have all kinds of people in t -

Ottawa man pleads guilty to multiple child sex crimes, faces total of 82 charges with numerous victims
Warning, this story contains graphic content.
Children knew Karl Njolstad as the neighbour who would eagerly invite them over to make movies in his rowhouse basement, filming the kids in front of a green screen as they pretended to fly or swim.
But that’s not why Njolstad invited the children over — it was how he lured them into his home. Details emerged in court this week of a horrific sex crimes case, one involving numerous young victims, thousands of images of child pornogra -
