No end in sight for Magee House as latest engineering review finds no 'emergency'
The rest of Magee House looks like it’s going to fall down any moment, but the city’s engineering intel suggests there’s no emergency, leaving the future of Hintonburg’s crippled heritage building in limbo.
According to Kitchissippi Coun. Jeff Leiper, the latest expert opinion from John G. Cooke and Associates says the crumpled stone building at 1119 Wellington St. W. isn’t a threat to public safety.
“At this point, the city has had engineers out to asses -

Ottawa Wine and Food Festival leaves bitter taste with suppliers over unpaid bills
Beside a wall of his Gatineau warehouse, J.R. Chardon keeps more than 9,000 wine glasses.
Neatly boxed and stacked, the glasses are the property of the Ottawa Wine and Food Festival. But Chardon has had them for more than a year, since the end of the 2017 festival at the EY Centre, where crowds of well-dressed revellers ate, drank and made merry.
Chardon says that roughly a month before the festival began on Nov. 3 last year, the event contacted his company, Edelweiss Party Rentals, about washin -

Paw Patrol: OPP rescues service dog 'Teddy' from Tay River
A pair of OPP officers teamed up to rescue Teddy after the therapy dog fell through the ice of the Tay River in Lanark County Thursday morning.
One of the officers also took a no-doubt frigid swim, but in the end, he and Teddy were unhurt.
At 11:04 a.m., the dog’s owner called 911 to report that the animal was in the water, front legs on ice at a spot about 3 km along the Rideau Trail from River Road in Drummond North Elmsley Township.
First, staff at the OPP’s communications centre -
Super library scored well, thanks in part to RendezVous' vision for LeBreton Flats. Now what?
The city should closely watch what’s happening with the implosion of the RendezVous LeBreton proposal for LeBreton Flats to decide whether it should continue planning a super library in the area, a city councillor says.
A joint facility for the Ottawa Public Library and Library and Archives Canada will be built on LeBreton Flats at 555 Albert St., a city-owned property just west of Bronson Avenue. The city chose the property after a site-selection study by a consultant, and recently named -

City hall blog: RendezVous meeting in mayor's boardroom had city wanting 'evidence of partnership'
Eleven items were on the agenda when Eugene Melnyk and John Ruddy met with Mayor Jim Watson and senior city staff in the mayor’s boardroom last August, including “evidence of partnership” and “plans for Kanata.”
The RendezVous LeBreton Group partners met with city bigwigs on Aug. 10 and, really, the only thing we know for sure that was discussed was LRT. The city had a big map of the future LRT system displayed in the boardroom when some journalists were allowed in -

From basketball to the beat, police volunteer earns berth on force
He said yes!
When city police offered a berth on the force to Haidar El Badry, a long-time volunteer with the force’s basketball outreach program, the recruiting section’s Sgt. Maria McKeen quipped that it was a “jobposal” instead of the now ubiquitous “promposal.”
El Badry, a correctional officer and Algonquin College grad, jumped at the chance Wednesday. Clearly emotional in an on-court video McKeen reposted, he tweeted “I can’t even speak. Just -

Adam: Debate over 24 Sussex shows how cheap and insecure Canadians are
The debate over what to do with 24 Sussex Drive is becoming tiresome.
Every now and then, we get ourselves in a tizzy over whether to fix the decrepit home of our prime ministers or raze it and build a new one. A report from the National Capital Commission raises the question of whether we should spend $34.5 million on renovations or $38.5 million to build a new edifice. Should we even be debating this?
The real question is not whether to renovate or build anew, but rather: Are Canadians so chea -

McLauchlin: If you support English in Quebec, back French in Ontario
Two weeks ago, the Doug Ford government announced major cuts to Ontario’s Francophone institutions. Queen’s Park planned to axe the planned Université de l’Ontario français and fold up the office of the French Language Services Commissioner. Seven days of backlash — from Franco-Ontarians, French- and some English-language press, and his own MPP, Amanda Simard — pushed Ford back partway. But the cuts to the Université project remain. In any case, -
Egan: Wong's Palace, Carling landmark for 40 years, takes last order
Wayner Wong left an orphanage in China in 1953 and, without a word of English, arrived in Canada with a tag around his neck — name and destination included — like an airmailed parcel in need of sorting.
That was his introduction to Winnipeg, where his adoptive father worked in a laundry and toted sacks around “just like Santa Claus”; washing, ironing and delivering shirts for a nickel each.
Though he was a teenager, Wong says teachers stuck him in Grade 4. “The -
Today's letters: On the GM closing in Oshawa
Oshawa should get guaranteed-income payment
Re: Canada’s auto industry at risk if GM closes Oshawa plant, union president says, Nov. 27.
If any time was the right time to create a Guaranteed Living Income for every Canadian citizen over 18, now is the time
Start with this one city. Rather than just keeping EI for all those workers, (if the plant cannot be retrofitted to build electric vehicles, perhaps with the workers taking over ownership of the plant), then at least have the federal and -

Where was his car?
His actions that morning would start a chain reaction that would lead to two Ottawa police officers’ conspiring to lie to their s -

Witness testifies alleged killer stabbed student from behind with no warning, then attacked him
Garworh Myers still carries the physical scars from the broken bottle that slashed across his face, but the emotional scars of helplessly watching his friend die cut deeper, he testified at Joe-Bryan Ndikuriyo’s murder trial.
Ndikuriyo has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder after Solomon Odekunle, a 21-year-old university student from Nigeria, was stabbed once in the neck with the jagged edge of a beer bottle as a late-night argument erupted on Nov. 6, 2016 outside Piper’s Ba -
