Get LeBreton Flats project done, Board of Trade urges NCC, City of Ottawa
The Ottawa Board of Trade on Wednesday released a stern statement urging the City of Ottawa and the National Capital Commission to make the redevelopment of LeBreton Flats a priority.
The statement was issued hours after the Board of Trade hosted a breakfast meeting with Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, Minister of Canadian Heritage Pablo Rodriguez, several NCC executives as well as representatives from the Ottawa Senators’ franchise and RendezVous LeBreton.

City held off on public consultations for RendezVous development application
An incomplete development package, the municipal election and a request by the National Capital Commission prevented the city from starting a public consultation on the LeBreton Flats planning application.
RendezVous LeBreton Group filed the development application at the end of August, but it wasn’t complete because it was missing a noise study.
The city subsequently received the noise study, but by then the election was in full swing.

Training on suicide rescues, more radios needed at Ottawa jail, guards tell Geddes inquest
The two correctional officers who found Cleve “Cas” Geddes hanging in his cell at the Ottawa jail called for better training on suicide rescues and said there were never enough radios for guards to use during emergencies.
The guards — Nathanial Carter and Lynn Roy — were the first to enter Geddes’ cell when he was found unresponsive and not breathing after hanging himself with a bedsheet on Feb. 8, 2017 at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre. They testified Wednesd -
Brazen thief pulls off 'Brinks job' to steal meat, cheese from Wellington resto
As much as he hates to admit it, Randy Fitzpatrick says he has a bit of a grudging admiration for a “mouth-breathing cockroach” who broke into the basement of Petit Bill’s Bistro this week.
“No doubt about it, the guy knew what he was doing,” Fitzpatrick, owner of Petit Bill’s, said in a telephone interview Wednesday. “He pulled off a Brinks job to get into the freezers.”
Shortly after midnight Monday, the thief gained access to an adjacent basemen -

Glavin: The death of Liberal democracy hasn't hit Canada (yet)
Distrust, destruction, deprivation and de-alignment. If you wanted to strike an alarmist tone about the spectres haunting Europe and the United States these days, these are what you would call the four horsemen of liberal democracy’s apocalypse. Thankfully, Roger Eatwell and Matthew Goodwin, in their just-published National Populism: The Revolt Against Liberal Democracy, take a more measured, long-term and dispassionate view.
They take the phenomenon quite seriously, mind you. No one with -

Firefighters had gained the upper hand shortly before 1 p.m.

Ottawa Senators wanted city to pay for NHL arena on LeBreton Flats early in redevelopment process, mayor says
The company that owns the Ottawa Senators wanted the City of Ottawa to build an arena for the hockey club as part of the LeBreton Flats redevelopment early in the negotiation process for the historic project, Mayor Jim Watson said Wednesday.
Watson said Eugene Melnyk’s company wanted the City of Ottawa to pay for a new arena on LeBreton Flats after RendezVous LeBreton Group, a partnership of the Senators and Trinity Developments, was named the preferred proponent in the National Capital Co -
Ottawa's Woodstock North will mark 50 years since iconic music festival
Ottawa musician John Fenton was 17 when he heard about the big festival happening in upstate New York. The lineup featured some of the hottest acts of the late ’60s psychedelic era, from Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix to Santana and the Grateful Dead.Friends were planning to pile into a van and make the drive from Ottawa to Bethel, N.Y., to attend the Woodstock Music and Art Fair that August weekend. They invited Fenton to join them.To his lasting regret, his parents nixed the idea.“I -

Workers dig out excavator in fatal Outaouais quarry landslide
Workers have finally succeeded in digging out the mechanical shovel in which a worker died when the equipment was buried in a gravel pit landslide early this month.
Equipment operator Daniel Dompierre, 31, died Nov. 1 when the excavator he was operating was buried at the pit near Highway 105 at Farrellton after a large amount of sand slid down from the wall of the pit.
It took first responders about one week to devise a safe plan to remove the victim’s body. The plan was devised by ge -

Boswell: LeBreton Flats has been cursed for almost two centuries
It’s been described as a “bombshell” moment, a “staggering” turn of events, an “egregious” clash of corporate interests that came clear out of the blue — and seems certain to doom the long-awaited, $4-billion megaproject to redevelop the last big chunk of Canada’s most storied vacant lot.
Eye-roll. Chuckle. Yawn.
Sure, it’s noteworthy that a $700-million lawsuit has been filed by Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk against his erstwhile -

Suspect accused of robbing same store three times: Police
A 42-year-old man is accused of robbing the same Westboro convenience store three times this autumn, armed each time with a kitchen or X-Acto knife.
Police investigating the Sept. 20, Oct. 13 and Nov. 21 robberies at the store on Richmond Road near Tweedsmuir Avenue believed the early-morning heists were all committed by the same person.
On Tuesday, the robbery and tactical units executed a search warrant at a nearby address on Kirkwood Avenue and arrested a man without incident.

House Works: The right tankless hot water system can handle cold well water
Tankless water heaters & well water
Q: Is it true that tankless water heaters aren’t suitable for well water? I’ve heard this water is too cold and tankless models can’t keep up.
A: I’ve heard this claim too, but I know for certain that it’s untrue because of my personal experience.
Well water may be somewhat colder than water that comes from municipal supplies, but the right size of tankless heater will work just fine.
I have a tankless heater on a well -
