Solomon Odekunle was just trying to make his way home the night of Nov. 6, 2016, and was waiting for a cab outside an east-end bar when Joe-Bryan Ndikuriyo “charged” out the doors and plunged a broken beer bottle into his neck, prosecutors alleged at the opening of Ndikuriyo’s murder trial.
Ndikuriyo, 29, has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the killing of Odekunle, a 21-year-old international economics student from Nigeria who was attending the University of Ottaw

One brother a homicide victim, the other a two-time accused killer
The same Ottawa police detectives who charged his brother with two counts of first-degree murder in separate homicides are now investigating the Black Friday killing of Yonis Barkhadle.
Yonis, 27, was shot multiple times, in what police are probing as a targeted attack, around 6:20 p.m. Friday in a packed South Keys Shopping Centre parking lot. He was found with multiple gunshot wounds in a lot on the north side of the mall. The homicide itself occurred in the CIBC parking lot next to OC Transpo -

LeBreton lawsuit: Project manager denies allegations made by Eugene Melnyk's company
Graham Bird, the president of a firm consulting for RendezVous LeBreton Group, has denied allegations made by Eugene Melnyk’s company, which filed a $700-million lawsuit related to the LeBreton Flats redevelopment.
Bird, who released a written statement Tuesday, said the claims “are entirely false and will be vigorously defended.”
Capital Sports Management Inc., whose parent company also owns the Ottawa Senators, filed the lawsuit last Friday, alleging Trinity Developments -

The 12-piece outfit is fronted by two of Ottawa’s finest singers, Rebecca Noelle and Jeff Rogers, and anchored by musical director/saxman Brian Asselin. They’re sharing the spotlight with Montreal’s Willis Pride. Advance tickets are $15, available at ticketweb -
Ottawa seniors' housing forum to explore better ways of living as we age
Pat Steenberg looks at her three-storey Bank Street apartment and envisions a utopia for senior citizens, a community of friends aging in place, living together and supporting each other.
It’s centrally located, beside a park, a couple of blocks from the pharmacy and the grocery store and on good public transit.
But those damn stairs!
“We can all go up the stairs now, but when we’re 80 or 85, can we still do it?” asks Steenberg, 71. “We don’t need anything els -

The province’s Special Investigations Unit has terminated its investigation into the death of an 87-year-old woman who collapsed at a Remembrance Day service in Clayton and was given the opioid antidote naloxone by an OPP officer who came to her aid.
The cause of death of the woman, whom family identified as Royal Canadian Legion volunteer Bobbie McCormack of nearby Almonte, has been ruled as cardiac arrest, the civilian police watchdog said Tuesday.

Rush-hour heads up: Drive slow and get rid of snow, police warn
Drivers in the capital may have dodged some traffic madness Tuesday morning, but police are warning there could be some issues in the afternoon rush hour.
With anywhere from two to five cm of snow forecast for the afternoon and evening, police are repeating their “See snow, drive slow” warnings.
And to make sure to brush the snow off your vehicles before heading out.
Remove snow from your vehicle's roof before it freezes. Once frozen, it can become a dangerous flying object.Nettoyez -

Fence (and loud Christmas tunes) make for bad neighbour in Kingston harassment case
A Kingston man is facing a charge of harassment by threatening conduct after police were called to a more than two-year dispute that began over a fence and ended with Christmas tunes played at heavy metal levels.
Police officers were called to a west-end home Sunday and heard the 65-year-old man’s female neighbour recount the saga, which started with her informing the accused in April 2016 that he was building a fence on her property.
Since then, she alleged, he’d yelled and swo -
Cohen: Our considered silence on Saudi Arabia is no better than Trump’s brazen acquiescence
It has been almost two months since Jamal Khashoggi was murdered in Istanbul. For all the threats and cries in Canada and the United States, nothing much has changed.
In fact, a cynic might say that things are unfolding as expected. This is what happens in a world in which your friends are the enemies of your enemies – or, more crassly, you just want their money. Call it practical.
Donald Trump is in denial over the murder; the president of the United States refuses to believe the findings -
'Failure is temporary' Redblacks quarterback vows
Chin up!
After a few days perspective, Redblacks quarterback Trevor Harris concedes he’s still “gutted” by the loss to Calgary in Sunday’s Grey Cup, but he expressed his determination and powerful pride in his team and city in an emotional Instagram post.
Harris used a picture of himself from behind, head down.
“Here’s the thing wrong with this picture.. my chin is down,” he wrote Tuesday, adding that “it didn’t end the way we wanted.

LeBreton lawsuit: Five options the NCC must weigh to move forward
The latest attempt to redevelop LeBreton Flats is petering out and the National Capital Commission must decide what to do next.
The businessmen involved in RendezVous LeBreton Group are now fighting each other in court and the NCC, which isn’t a named defendant in the $700-million lawsuit filed by Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk targeting partner John Ruddy of Trinity Developments, is on the sidelines trying to rescue a city-transforming project.

Denley: The sooner Melnyk is out of the deal, the better
Is there a future for LeBreton Flats redevelopment without the involvement of mercurial Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk? Absolutely. In fact, it would be easier to get the job done with Melnyk out of the picture.
Melnyk’s LeBreton partner, veteran Ottawa developer John Ruddy, has a proven record of developing complex projects. He is a key force behind the tricky redevelopment of Lansdowne Park, for example. Melnyk, by comparison, has proven time and again that working co-operatively wi -

Traffic chaos begins: Hwy 7 reopens after truck crash, teen hurt in morning collision
Give yourself extra time if you’re going anywhere today.
Late Monday, Environment Canada issued a special weather statement calling for snow and bad driving conditions. In particular, they warned:
“This snowfall may have an impact on the morning commute. Motorists should be prepared for poor winter driving conditions as untreated roads may become snow covered and slippery.”
They were right.
Conditions are worsening and there are already a couple of issues to deal with.

LeBreton lawsuit: NCC must weigh options for the capital's 'jewel'
The latest attempt to redevelop LeBreton Flats is petering out and the National Capital Commission must decide what to do next.
The businessmen involved in RendezVous LeBreton Group are now fighting each other in court and the NCC, which isn’t a named defendant in the $700-million lawsuit filed by Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk targeting partner John Ruddy of Trinity Developments, is on the sidelines trying to rescue a city-transforming project.

Labelle: Parents’ bill of rights is the wrong choice for Ontario
As the mother of two small children, a scientist, and an activist for quality public education, I’m deeply concerned about the Ontario government’s proposal for a parents’ bill of rights.
The Ministry of Education’s current consultation asks for feedback on what elements should be included in a formal “Parents’ Bill of Rights.”
After living in the most conservative parts of the United States, I’ve seen how a parents’ bill of rights can be use -
Bagnall: Senators' lawsuit could be needed wakeup call for Ottawa, NCC
It was a startling omission. For half an hour last Thursday, board members of the National Capital Commission spoke in favour of a resolution that would give RendezVous LeBreton’s two main partners — Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk and Trinity Development founder John Ruddy — two more months “to get their act together.”
The directors were unanimous in their view that, for once, government was not to blame for the lack of progress on a major project, in this case -

Hurrelmann: Canadian politicians should prepare for Brexit, not use it as a partisan wedge issue
When the release of a draft “withdrawal agreement” between the United Kingdom and the European Union plunged the British government into chaos in recent days, Canadian federal Conservative leader Andrew Scheer felt compelled to remind Canadians that he had been an early advocate of Brexit. In a June 2016 opinion piece in the National Post, Scheer had presented Brexit as a chance to rescue “British political traditions” from “the dictates of EU bureaucrats in Brussel -

Canadian Forces says submarines can operate until mid-2020s – but still no details on how fleet will be upgraded
The Victoria-class submarines were expected to reach the end of their operational lives starting in 2022, according to documents obtained under the Access to Information law.
That could have been a major problem for the federal government as it is looking at planning a modernization program for the on-board systems on the class, starting in 2023 or 2024.
If the subs were to reach the end of their operational lives starting a year earlier, how would that have worked?
Defence Watch asked that ques -
