'It's inhumane': Suicidal man should never have been placed in solitary confinement, sister tells inquest
Placing her suicidal, schizophrenic brother in solitary confinement at the Ottawa jail when a judge had ordered him admitted to a psychiatric hospital was “downright cruelty,” the sister of Cleve Geddes testified Monday during the first day of a coroner’s inquest into his death.
“I don’t know whose idea it is to put anybody in solitary confinement,” Sigrid Geddes testified. “Just imagine if it was your sister or your brother in that situation. If someone -

Mayor Watson stops publishing daily itinerary on social media
Mayor Jim Watson has stopped publishing his daily itinerary on Twitter because the tweets apparently weren’t very popular.
Watson was an open book when it came to his daily commitments. He would start each day with a tweet, listing events in his schedule, whether it was meeting with a cabinet minister, attending the opening of a new business or returning constituents’ calls.
According to Watson’s office, his agenda tweets weren’t as interesting to his followers.

Rubin: Ottawa needs a public, not private, vision for LeBreton Flats
This is not just another timeout on LeBreton Flats, in which the current players are benched, booted or rejuggled. This time, the game is over.
So let’s instead get going on a visionary, public-purposed plan for LeBreton.
Some “thanks” for this possibility must go to Ottawa Senators/Capital Sports Management Inc. owner Eugene Melnyk for effectively killing his downtown hockey arena project on LeBreton.
No thanks can go to the National Capital Commission’s bungled plan for -

Inquest Monday into hanging death of mentally-ill prisoner
A coroner’s inquest is scheduled to start Monday at Ottawa City Hall into the death of a 30-year-old man suffering from schizophrenia who hanged himself at the Ottawa Carleton Detention Centre.
A group of family members advocating for incarcerated loved ones will take part in the inquest into the death of Cleve Gordon Geddes. He died in the hospital on February 10, 2017, after transfer from the Innes Road jail.
This newspaper reported at the time that it was two days after he hanged himsel -
'I can't see' (and other dumb excuses) from police traffic blitz
The traffic unit issued 141 cell phone charges and 155 speeding charges in the last week and nabbed two stunt drivers going more than 50 km over the legal limit, according to a Monday update.
And they heard some doozies when it comes to dumb excuses.
A driver going 125 km/h in an 80 zone on Limebank Road in Sunday’s pea soup explained “”I can’t see… it’s foggy,” Const. Phil Kane reported.
“Alllllllllllllllrighty then,” Kane tweeted.

Snow-vember continues with nearly 10 cm expected by Tuesday night.

So be ready for poor driving conditions Tuesday morning before the periods of snow taper off to scattered flurries Wednesday.

Egan: Can we salvage LeBreton, where dreams have gone to die for 50 years?
When LRT opens next spring, there will be two central stations — Bayview and Pimisi — book-ending 50 acres of nothing, the desolate flop that is LeBreton Flats.
It’s even shaped like a giant, crooked zero.
Last week’s dramatic news about the failed partnership between Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk and Trinity Development Group chairman John Ruddy is detailed in a $700-million lawsuit filed Friday.
It’s a searing document. In it, Melnyk takes a flamethrower to -
What Lanark County is learning from Iceland's approach to reducing teen drinking
In 2016, Iceland welcomed a Lanark County import by the name of Eliza Reid as the country’s first lady after her husband, Gudni Johannesson, was elected president. The Oxford-educated Reid grew up on a hobby farm near Ashton, on the edge of the rural Ottawa Valley county.
Two years later, Lanark County is repaying the hospitality, in a sense, by welcoming an import from Iceland by the name of Alfgeir Kristjansson. And county public health officials and community activists are hoping the me -
Rockland boy with polio-like syndrome adjusting to life back at home
Nearly three months after he arrived at CHEO suffering from a rare polio-like condition, four-year-old Xavier Downton is back home in Rockland and preparing to return to school.
Life is quite different for Xavier than it was before he was rushed to CHEO on Sept. 4 suffering from what his family thought was the flu. The boy who was looking forward to starting hockey this fall now uses a wheelchair — something doctors and therapists believe is temporary.
“They think he is going to walk -
Today's letters: Please get the downtown arena built (or not)
Just get the downtown arena built
Re: LeBreton Flats plan in jeopardy after ‘unresolved issues’ between Melnyk and Ruddy, Nov. 23.
Building a new hockey arena on LeBreton Flats will reinvigorate the Ottawa Senators and bring new life to downtown Ottawa. If this deal doesn’t go through, the Senators will remain out in the sticks, 30 minutes from Ottawa, and will attract only the very had-core fans or those who live in Kanata, Stittsville, et cetera. If this deal is blown, then i -
Ramji: It's time to warn women – pregnancy and cannabis don't mix
We have heard a lot about policy, social and economic implications of Canada’s legalization of marijuana. Unfortunately, the impact of cannabis use on women’s health has been inadequately discussed.
As an obstetrician, I occasionally cover labour and delivery shifts in small Ontario community hospitals, while in the midst of completing my training as a high-risk pregnancy sub-specialist at the University of Ottawa. Some of the nurses in these community hospitals have remarked to me t -

Banerjee: Canada's Afghanistan aid urgently needs review – but that doesn't mean we should go it alone
The recent interaction of John Sopko – the American Special Inspector General of Afghanistan Reconstruction – with the Canadian media on billions of wasted aid dollars in Afghanistan, has stirred Canadian public interest on the forgotten subject of Canada’s Afghanistan mission; so much so that the Canadian government, which normally ignores Canadian critics’ warnings on Canada’s questionable performance in Afghanistan, considers a review of Canadian aid to Afghanist -

Fans follow along Redblacks roller-coaster ride of a Grey Cup game
The Ottawa Redblacks served up another roller-coaster ride of a Grey Cup as their fans followed along from 3,500 kilometres away.
Hundreds of plaid-clad fans flocked to Lansdowne Park to take in the big game on the big screen in the comfort of one of the many pubs on the plaza across from the home team’s home turf, TD Place.
