The man who killed Christine MacNeil was convicted of first-degree murder Friday in a courthouse only two doors away from where he shot her.
Blake Dooley, 56, formerly of Mountshannon Drive in Ottawa, shot MacNeil in the Four Points Hotel in Gatineau minutes before the polls closed on election night, Oct. 19, 2015. She was 25.
MacNeil had been dropped off at the hotel by someone in a black car. Police said soon afterward that they believed she was “targeted.”

Ottawa Senators owner alleges mayor's office told him not to pull out of downtown deal during municipal election
Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson’s office threatened to cut ties with Eugene Melnyk if the Senators owner announced during the recent municipal election campaign that he was pulling out of the LeBreton Flats project, Melnyk’s lawsuit alleges.
According to the lawsuit, Melnyk’s company wrote to Watson on Sept. 17, 2018, saying it wasn’t willing to proceed with the LeBreton project until its concerns with project partner Trinity Developments were addressed.

Kirk and Virginia MacDonald, a father-and-daughter jazz team, join forces on the bandstand
Unlike most girls, Virginia MacDonald attended plenty of jazz shows in “dark, hazy clubs” when she was younger. Her reaction to the music? “This is so cool!” says MacDonald, now 24.
Of course, her appreciation of the music was furthered by the fact that her father Kirk, one of Canada’s premiere tenor saxophonists, was on stage. “I saw the joy that music brought my dad, and the countless other jazz musicians were present in my younger life,” Virginia says -

MacDougall: For Justin Trudeau, Trump is the greatest gift of all
Black Friday’s madness is here and Justin Trudeau is undoubtedly busy shopping for his best mate, Donald Trump. It’s a tricky one, even for an Amazon algorithm. What do you get the man who’s consigning Andrew Scheer to second place?
Whatever Trudeau chooses, he should spend big to keep Trump sour. The more Trump throws his toys out of the pram, soils convention and acts against Canada’s interests, the more he acts in Trudeau’s. If Trump keeps on keeping on, Scheer c -

Kurl: Battle over balanced budgets could leave Trudeau a voter deficit
Trudeau’s big gamble. Prime minister rolls dice on spending. Government’s deficit double-down.
Choose whichever casino-related analogy you like, but this week’s announcement of deficit-inflating tax cuts aimed at stimulating business investment does indeed represent a risk, based on three things.
First, whether – and for how long – these new tax write-offs allowing manufacturers to recover expenditures on new equipment and green energy will actually bolster the Cana -

Renovation Transformation: Lavish basement makeover will keep the kids in the nest
At some point, whether they want to admit it or not, many parents can’t wait for their children to leave home.
If you renovate your basement like Sonia Lemire you might want to kiss that dream goodbye.

The pipeline battles are not about conduit but content. Clean up the sands and the world will -

A fixture on Elgin for more than 35 years, Boko Bakery winds down with free treats on Sunday
Jun Sakiyama started working at Boko Bakery, his family’s long-standing business on Elgin Street, when he was 10 years old.
“I was probably cracking eggs and rolling out dough in the back. But nothing really intense and committed,” Sakiyama said.
He is 36 now, the same age as the bakery, and in the last few years his workload has grown more intense, and even celebrated. Sakiyama has excelled at creating the wealth of decorated cookies that for many in downtown Ottawa are s -

Bagnall: What could be the issues between Melnyk and Ruddy?
You can’t say we weren’t warned. Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk openly mused last summer about the risks in the $4-billion project to remake LeBreton Flats. His job was to finance the construction of a new $600-million arena — the centrepiece of the bid known as RendezVous LeBreton.
Melnyk’s partner, John Ruddy, is the founder and executive chairman of Trinity Developments, responsible for building the condominiums that would bring humanity onto the Flats.
Yet, oddly -

The OPP tweeted at 8:30 p.m. Thursday that the lanes had been reopened in both directions following two separate collisions that had halted the flow of traffic in both directions on Highway 401 west of Kingston that afternoon.
The OPP originally tweeted that both collisions involved transport trucks, and that one also included a passenger car just east of Odessa.

EGAN: After four years of work, LeBreton NHL plan veers toward ditch
Thursday was a dismal day for the National Capital Commission, the mayor, Eugene Melnyk, the Ottawa Senators — the city, even.
We found failure on the Flats one more time. It is to weep.
At a meeting of NCC directors, it was apparent the $4-billion plan to finally bring life to LeBreton is hanging by a thread, needing a miracle to rescue it by a January deadline.
