People really care about how the National Capital Commission maintains Ottawa’s official residences, research shows.
The NCC hired Nanos Research to poll Canadians on the agency’s work and their perception of the capital region.
When it came to the “importance of maintaining residences for Canada’s official leaders,” 44 per cent of Canadians said it’s “very important” and another 38 per cent said it’s “somewhat important.”

Online vigil, international outpouring for 95-year-old activist in Belleville hospital
Author and activist Harry Leslie Smith continued to fight for his life in a Belleville hospital on Thursday as prime ministers, politicians and ordinary people from both sides of the Atlantic offered online tributes to the Second World War veteran and social justice warrior.
The 95-year-old Smith, who calls himself “the world’s oldest rebel,” was taken to Belleville General Hospital by ambulance on Tuesday with low blood pressure and breathing difficulties.

PM Justin Trudeau rants and roars at Newfoundland 'shed party' on the Hill
Even seasoned actors need a hand with their lines from time to time.
On Wednesday night, Allan Hawco, known for his roles in The Republic of Doyle and Caught, got help from the prime minister himself.
Hawco, who was emcee at a Newfoundland-style “shed party” on Parliament Hill, flubbed the lines to the traditional tune “We’ll Rant and We’ll Roar (like true Newfoundlanders)” by the Ryans and the Pittmans. The PM, who was also on stage, jumped in -

LeBreton Flats plan in jeopardy after 'unresolved issues' between Melnyk and Ruddy
The historic redevelopment of LeBreton Flats, and the future of the Ottawa Senators’ plans to move downtown, are in jeopardy because the two businessmen at the helm of RendezVous LeBreton Group have “unresolved issues,” leaving the National Capital Commission with an option to blow up the entire process.
The gut-shot was delivered by NCC staff in a public meeting of the board of directors on Thursday, although board members received the news in a more meaty presentation behind -

Editorial: LeBreton plan now skating on thin ice
Two years ago, amid much fanfare, the National Capital Commission officially chose a business consortium called RendezVous LeBreton as its preferred partner for negotiating the redevelopment of Ottawa’s most famous empty stretch of land. Earlier this year, the NCC followed up with an announcement that it had reached agreement in principle for RendezVous to buy the land. Development talks would proceed.
Well, those sunny days are certainly behind us. Just a few weeks ago, the NCC was inform -

Adam: Amid winter weather – we still await tornado repairs
It is eight weeks and counting since tornadoes hit the Ottawa region and left a trail of destruction from Dunrobin to Arlington Woods, Gatineau to Greenboro. And still, people like me wait in frustration, with no relief from the storm damage as winter beckons. Victims, such as an Arlington Woods couple who had gone without hot water all this time in their condo apartment, have been complaining about the slow pace of repairs. I feel their frustration.
That it took the intervention of a city counc -

Rebel Tory MPP defies party to pan cuts to French services
An Eastern Ontario member of Premier Doug Ford’s caucus said she feels “disappointment and frustration” after unsuccessfully working within the government to reverse decisions to scrap a new French-language university and standalone French-language services commissioner.
Glengarry-Prescott-Russell MPP Amanda Simard said in a statement in French Wednesday night that she became aware of the decisions minutes before the official announced last Thursday after she “worked as m -
Canadian Surface Combatant project faces second legal challenge
The Canadian Surface Combatant program, which will provide new warships to replace the existing fleet of Halifax-class frigates, appears to be sailing into rough legal waters.
One of the bidders in the Canadian Surface Combatant program is going to court to challenge the decision to select Lockheed Martin and BAE as the preferred bidder for the project.
Alion is asking for a judicial review of the decision and an order prohibiting the Canadian government from allowing Irving to enter into any de -
Power outage closes Brookfield High School
Brookfield High School students get Thursday off thanks to a power outage.
While Ottawa-Carleton District School Board staff are at the Hog’s Back area school assessing the situation, they don’t expect power to be back on until later in the day, according to a release Thursday morning.
There’s limited heat in the building so even the most studious students are asked to stay away.
The school is expected to reopen Friday.
Heads up, Brookfield! https://t.co/4olJpZVWe1

Trio charged for pellet gun shots at joggers in Clarence-Rockland
Two young adults and a teenager have been charged in connection with air-powered pellet-gun shots fired at joggers in the city of Clarence-Rockland on Nov. 12.
No injuries were sustained.

A third male, who cannot be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, faces the same charges.

Record-breaking cold continues, but slush by the weekend
It’s a record-breaking day, but not the good kind.
A frostbite warning remains in effect for Thursday as the region has already set a dubious record as the coldest Nov. 22 ever.
Early morning readings of a pure -15 C (feels like -25 with the windchill) beats out the -14.4 C set in 1972.
Do you feel proud?
Anyway, the weather office and Ottawa Public Health are maintaining their frostbite advisories in the region, as Thursday’s high is expected to be only -9 C.
And there’s a war -

Egan: She caught pick-pocket perps on video six months ago. Why no arrests?
The Ottawa police see it as a petty property crime. Not Wendy Smith. She first felt violated, now frustrated and ignored.
How often, after all, are police handed video evidence of a crime in progress, with a clear view of the two perpetrators? Like me and you, she considered this a clue.
“I am frustrated,” she said one day this week. “I worked my ass off and pretty much handed them the win.” But, six months later, no arrests.
Readers may recall the widely-viewed video, wh -
