Ford government withdraws La Nouvelle Scène's $2.9-million grant
Ottawa-Vanier MPP Nathalie Des Rosiers, who championed a $2.9-million provincial grant to keep a debt-strapped French-language theatre in Lowertown alive, said Wednesday that she will fight to offset the critical damage of that grant suddenly being withdrawn by the Ford government.
Des Rosiers said she learned on Wednesday through media reports that the grant, which she announced in May, had been rescinded. Now, the possibility of La Nouvelle Scène Gilles Desjardins closing is “cert -
Cost of fixing 24 Sussex? $34.5 million
The National Capital Commission has a dilemma that every owner of a decrepit old car will understand: Should it spend $34.5 million to renovate the crumbling official residence at 24 Sussex Drive or spend $38.5 million and build a new one?
And does it have to do either, if no one lives there anyway?
After years of analyzing the “critical” needs of 24 Sussex, the NCC has now publicly estimated these figures as the costs of fixing or replacing the Victorian house and its 1950s extensio -

Head injuries and the CFL: Grievance and class-action suit still pending
During Grey Cup week in Edmonton, the Canadian Football League wants to focus on celebrating its history and the on-field performances of the Ottawa Redblacks and Calgary Stampeders, who have earned the right to contest the league championship on Sunday.
Still in the background, though, are legal matters regarding head injuries.
A grievance by former receiver Arland Bruce is still bound for arbitration, and it will have a substantial impact on a class-action lawsuit involving more than 200 other -

Four teens face charges after Orléans attack
Four teenaged boys have been charged after another boy was punched and kicked and apparently left unconscious and convulsing outside St. Peter’s High School two weeks ago.
The four-against-one attack on Nov. 8 was recorded on video and widely shared on social media.
The video shows a boy on the ground trying to shield himself from blows delivered by a number of youths until one kicks him in the head, as one bystander appears to be trying to intervene to protect him. Then the boy on th -

Glavin: Americans aren't quite as polarized as we think
As Donald Trump’s America continues what looks like a dizzying freefall into a dystopian grudge match pitting Democrats against Republicans, hinterland nativists against coastal cosmopolitans and routine street brawls between the rightist Patriot Prayer gang and the window-smashing anarcho-blackshirts of Antifa, it’s tempting to latch on to anything that looks like good tidings.
The ugly culture-war polarization that has enfeebled the United States has not made too much of a mark in -

Holinsky: What the city of Ottawa can do to help end homelessness
Last week, the City of Ottawa announced it will close the Forward Avenue Family Shelter, effective Dec. 15. This shelter closure will affect 14 families with children, interrupting their school year and displacing these families from their neighbourhood.
Forward Avenue, an old school repurposed as an emergency family shelter, is at the end of its life cycle, and repairs would be costly. This is a wakeup call. As a city, we have seen a 33-per-cent rise in family shelter use since the adoption of -

A 38-year-old Ottawa man faces a raft of charges following a raucous scene on Innes Road in which a police officer was struck by a fleeing vehicle, which then bumped a pursuing police cruiser repeatedly in a chase in the east end.
